Delaware Community Mourns Beloved Neighborhood Dog After He Passes Due to Cancer

Darby, an 8-year-old Golden Retriever, was beloved by everyone who walked by him in his Delaware neighborhood, including the kids who would stop by and greet him on their way to and from school everyday.

When Darby became ill with cancer in December his family made the difficult decision that it was time to say goodbye.

According to Fox29, in the midst of her own grief, Darby's owner Janet Mount said, "The first thing we thought of was how are we gonna tell the kids in the neighborhood?"

Janet had a sign made that heartbreakingly showed photos of the beautiful dog and read "We wanted to let you know that Darby passed away on January 5, 2024 due to cancer. We loved all your hugs, kisses and sticks you gave him on your way to and from school. Thank you for loving him as much as we did."

What a beautiful way to honor Darby's memory and let the people in the neighborhood know what happened to the friendly dog. After seeing the sign, neighbors stopped by to pay their condolences and kids made handwritten sympathy cards.

This is such a beautiful story of a community coming together to share in the grief that this dog had crossed the rainbow bridge. It's just such a lovely idea. We hope Darby knows how loved his was both by his family and his neighbors.

Ways To Honor a Dog That Has Passed

Losing a dog is one of the most heartbreaking experiences a pet owner can ever have, and there are many ways you can commemorate the life your precious pup lived and all the joy and love they brought you.

Certain parks have a rainbow bridge where dog owners can place the collar or tags of a dog that has passed. This is a lovely way you can remember your pup and pay homage to all the other beloved dogs who have passed.

You can plant a memorial garden in your yard and place a stone or path marker with your pups name on it.

You can create a memory book filled with beautiful photos of your dog.

You can light a candle in your dog's honor on their birthday, holidays, or whenever it brings you comfort.

You can adopt or foster a dog in honor or your pet, or make a donation in their name to your local animal shelter or Humane Society.

Our hearts go out to everyone who is mourning the loss of their precious dog.
