Death Stranding is getting a surprise spinoff film.

The hit video game, which stars The Walking Dead actor Norman Reedus as a courier delivering vital packages in a dystopian world, will be adapted into a live-action movie by A24.

According to the official synopsis: "The film promises to delve into the mysteries surrounding the apocalyptic event called the “Death Stranding”, which blurred the lines between life and death, and brought forth nightmarish creatures into a world on the brink of collapse."

The game, which is available on PC and console, doesn’t immediately lend itself to a live-action tie in. It’s the first game in a new and untested series that only launched recently in 2020.

Usually, video games need to be established for years before getting the film or TV series treatment. Look at The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Sonic The Hedgehog, The Last of Us, and Detective Pikachu for examples.

Still, with A24 producing, this arguably isn’t intended to be a mainstream hit from the studio behind Everything Everywhere All At Once and Marcel The Shell With Shoes On.

Kojima said in a statement: “There are a lot of 'game adaptation films' out there but what we are creating is not just a direct translation of the game. The intention is that our audience will not only be fans of the games, but our film will be for anyone who loves cinema. We are creating a Death Stranding universe that has never been seen before, achievable only through the medium of film, it will be born.”

The cast hasn’t been confirmed yet, but with the video game featuring Reedus, along with Mads Mikkelsen, Léa Seydoux, and Guillermo del Toro, there’s plenty of star power to draw from.

There’s no release date but don't expect a release before 2026.
