Talk to Me has surprised the world by beating Ari Aster's Hereditary to become the highest-grossing horror movie at the domestic box office from indie production company A24.

Hereditary was Aster's debut feature that premiered at Sundance in 2018, where it was heralded for "[changing] the game" and being "deeply unsettling". Talk to Me debuted at Sundance this year to similar fanfare, where critics praised it for being "an exciting new spin on the possession genre" and called it "the next big horror breakout from Sundance".

That premonition came true because the Sundance darling to box office hit pipeline continues its legacy in the Philippou brothers' first film.

Starring a knockout performance from Sophia Wilde, Talk to Me follows a group of friends who discover how to conjure spirits using an embalmed hand. When they become hooked on the new thrill, one of them goes too far, unleashing terrifying supernatural forces.

The film has now crossed $44.5 million at the domestic box office and a further $18.5 million internationally to make a total of $63.1 worldwide on a $4.5 million budget.

Hereditary ended its theatrical run with a gross of $82.8 at the global box office on a $10 million budget.
