Selena Gomez will star as Linda Ronstadt in a new biopic, and it's just been announced by Showbiz 411 that David O. Russell will direct.

Currently in pre-production with James Keach and Ronstadt's manager John Boylan producing, Gomez will star as the 11-time Grammy-winner and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame musician.

David O. Russell is a five-time Oscar nominee, having directed films such as The Fighter, Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle.

His most recent film, Amsterdam, starred Margot Robbie, Christian Bale and John David Washington in a story about three friends in the 1930s who witness a murder, are framed for it, and uncover one of the most outrageous plots in American history. The film cost $80 million to make but made just $31.2 million at the global box office and was panned by critics who gave it a rotten score of 37% on Rotten Tomatoes.

O. Russell is also signed on to direct Super Toys, starring Keke Palmer and Sacha Baron Cohen, which follows two groovy '70s toy sales reps on a mission to save themselves, their marriage and their live-wire daughter while on the road in Middle America.

If two projects on the go weren't enough for the director, he has a third in Madden, which is another true life story about the fiery former NFL head coach, John Madden.

It seems for now that the Ronstadt biopic is the priority, with further casting announcements still yet to be revealed.
