Sadly, I’ve gotten more paranoid riding on the road in the last few years, and I wouldn’t ride without one of these nifty radar blinky lights. I particularly appreciate how the Varia adjusts its blink pattern and intensity as it detects cars getting closer. This gives me hope that I’ve given myself the best chance at being seen by drivers.

Aries Spherical Bike Helmet

The Aries is Giro’s best-ventilated and most protective road helmet to date. It replaces the Aether, and is now the brand’s premier road helmet. The recent improvements come with no added sticker shock. In fact, the Aires comes in cheaper than the Aether. The Aether sold for $325 to $350 when new, but the Aires is $300, and that’s before you factor in the extra discount from the REI sale.

Podium Steel Water Bottle

Insulated steel water bottles are wonderful for riders who prize crisp tasting and cold water. These bottles are also durable and easy to clean. Best of all you can even use them for iced coffee or warm tea (depending on weather and beverage preferences).

Wildcat ChromaPop

The Wildcat is among Smith’s best sunglasses due flexible fit, visual clarity, comfort, and style. The glasses come in several lens options including the brand’s color-enhancing Chromapop technology. They ship with a hard case plus an additional clear lens for low light protection. These are great for riders who desire maximum coverage and a bold style.

Receptor

The Receptor is my favorite gravel tire for hardpack surfaces. It’s reasonably light and rolls efficiently, and the casing offers a compliant ride. I’m impressed with its toughness, too. This one has shrugged off some impressively hard hits for a semi-slick tire—which typically offers less protection against punctures than a knobby.

TPU Tube

TPU tubes are fantastic. They’re super light and ultra-compact— about half the size and weight of standard butyl tube—tough, and if you haven’t committed to tubeless, they roll fast, too. Due to their size and weight, they’re perfect for long rides away from civilization because you can fit two into the space of one standard tube.

Plus, WTB’s TPU tubes come with patches so you can continue to use the tube even if you manage to puncture it.

DRT 4.1 Fat Bike

An already well-priced bike is now an even better value. With monstrous 4.8-inch-wide tires, Co-Op's (REI house brand) DRT 4.1 will float over packed snow, sand, and claw its way over rough terrain. The parts blend is solid, too, with a SRAM 12-speed drivetrain and Shimano hydraulic disc brakes.

With mounts aplenty for hydration and cargo, this bike is suited for backcountry adventures on the roads and trails less traveled.
