Cyclists Race Up America's Steepest Street

Riding up one steep street can be enough to have most riders ponder taking up crochet or another sedentary hobby. And yet in Pittsburgh, there is a race in which riders race up Twelve of the steepest hills in the city called the Dirty Dozen.

Youtuber Mitch Boyer, famous for riding up steep streets came and documented the race. He even added a 13th street.

The Dirty Dozen is a very cool race format. Rather than being a mass start race, There are waves of riders who softly pedal between the hills and race on the climbs. It is sort of like a reverse enduro!

The course is intense. Twelve hard efforts like that are a lot. One competitor said that the Dirty Dozen put him in the hospital with an abnormal heartbeat.

Boyer was at this race because he has garnered a reputation as a rider of steep streets. As you saw, Pittsburgh's streets give other locales a run for their money.

To a casual observer, the steepest hill record should not be a controversial one. Like it is right there just measure it! However, there has been a large controversy around it.

A street in New Zealand lost and regained the title of the World’s Steepest Street when the measurement technique changed to require measuring down the middle of the street. Steepness records are serious business! Read more about this below.

The bonus street in Pittsburgh had a short section that was what Mitch thought was the steepest section of road he had ridden. Unfortunately, the stretch was too short to be counted as a measurable section. New Zealand retains its title.
