Cyclist Attempts To Climb World's Steepest Street

There is a point when a hill becomes too steep to ride for just about everyone save track cyclists. There is one such road in New Zealand.

Watch cycling YouTuber Mitch Boyer attempt to climb Baldwin Street, which holds the Guinness World Record for steepest road. It is not as easy as the confident Boyer thought it would be.

Like many internet users, Boyer called into question the steepness of the road. How could it really be that steep? He has ridden in San Francisco after all!

Much to Mitch’s embarrassment, the camera does in fact lie, and the GoPro effect may have led him to make some overconfident statements from across the Pacific. He was sorely disabused of the premise that San Fran was steeper. All I know is that I would love to own a transmission shop in that town! It does seem like a great location for a bike lift.

The funniest part about Baldwin Street is the debate between it and another street in Wales about which is the steepest street in the world. Though Baldwin Street lost the title, it regained it after an "extensive review" that determined that the center of the road was where to measure from. The curved road in Wales could not count grades that cut across a switchback. Read more here.

Thankfully the matter has been put to bed and we can all sleep easy knowing that proper protocol was used to measure this road. No more drama about which road is the worst to climb.
