If you’ve ever had the pleasure of shopping at a Mast General Store in the Southeast, you’re likely familiar with Cow Tales. The long, chewy sweets—made with a wheat-based caramel wrapped around a milky cream center—fill up a whole barrel in the candy section. (As a kid, it was my favorite fuel for a day of shopping in Waynesville, North Carolina.)

On Friday, April 5, perfectly timed with National Caramel Day, Cow Tales is celebrating their 40th birthday. The beloved candy “tails” were launched in 1984 as an elongated version of Caramel Creams (also called Bulls-Eyes): the signature product of 129-year-old Goetze’s Candy Company, Inc. The sixth-generation family candy business, founded in 1895, still produces these iconic American sweets at their headquarters in Baltimore, Maryland.

Through years of long-standing tradition, Goetze’s Candy has released new flavors of Cow Tales including Caramel, Strawberry Smoothie, Caramel Brownie (formerly Chocolate), and Caramel Apple. In celebration of four decades, a new flavor is joining the lineup: Honey Bun Cow Tales.

This North Carolina twist on the classic Cow Tale will have the same chewy (not sticky!) texture, and features Honey Bun-flavored caramel with hints of cinnamon throughout and the creamy center fans know and love.

“We are thrilled to introduce our newest flavor, Honey Bun Cow Tales, in celebration of National Caramel Day and the 40th anniversary of Cow Tales,” said Mitchell Goetze, CEO of Goetze's Candy Co., Inc. “As a family-owned and operated business…we pride ourselves on evolving while remaining true to our roots. We’re confident our new Honey Bun flavor is the perfect addition to our delicious caramel offerings.”

New Honey Bun Cow Tales will be available at local retailers like Food Lion and Dollar Tree and can be found through Goetze’s store locator. The Cow Tales will come in the classic 1-oz. length as well as in a 4-oz. Minis bag.

Cow Tales are one of those nostalgic treats that span generations, so this announcement is a great excuse to gather parents and grandparents for a sweet celebration. We’ve also got a delicious Honey Bun Cake recipe at the ready in case you want to make a day of it.
