Thanks to a couple in Wheat Ridge, Colo., a man and a woman who experienced a dangerous car crash are alive and safe.

On Sunday night, Jonathan Moreno and his girlfriend, Elexcus Garcia, witnessed a car swerve to avoid another vehicle and then crash into a pole. Immediately, the couple jumped into action.

As Garcia called 911, Moreno attempted to pull the driver, who was in and out of consciousness, from the vehicle. “He’s a big dude,” he told the Denver Channel. Moreno told the news outlet, “I went over to a [bystander] and said, ‘Help me grab him, because the car is going to blow up.'”

After successfully pulling the driver out, Moreno pulled a female passenger out of the vehicle.

Just seconds after Moreno freed the couple from the car, it burst into flames.

“His car is on fire. He’s a human being in need, you know?” Moreno told the news outlet. “I’d rather live with myself getting hurt saving someone, then live with myself knowing I could have helped save him.”

Garcia added: “If it was my family in there, I’d want someone to do the same. We didn’t know if there were more people in the back that needed to be pulled out, because it was on fire. We were thinking they may be unconscious and we’d have to pull them out before the car blows up.”

The driver had several broken bones, according to Moreno. “He said his chest felt like it [was] wet. I picked up his shirt to check. His bone was popping a little up.”

The couple stayed on the scene until an ambulance arrived. According to the Colorado State Patrol, although the injured couple suffered serious injuries, they will survive.

“I’m not a hero, just a human being helping another in need. A hero is Superman,” Moreno said.
