The ‘Completely False’ Beauty Rule a Makeup Artist Is Begging Women Over 50 to Toss Out

There are a lot of unspoken rules (some more unspoken than others) when it comes to beauty and makeup, and the list seems to grow as we age. While it’s a blessing to grow older, mature and maybe develop some wrinkles, the makeup world can sometimes feel a bit cagey. For people middle-aged or older, it’s not really the norm to "experiment" with makeup or bolder looks. But one celebrity makeup artist, Doniella “Donni” Davy, is hoping more individuals will start—and feel empowered because of it.

Davy is maybe best known for being the head makeup artist of HBO’s hit series, Euphoria, but she is also the creative director and co-founded Half Magic Beauty with A24. As the co-creator of a beauty brand that’s basically founded on bright colors and tons of glitter, Davy feels passionate about encouraging people to wear these looks even if it’s not their normal style. And she’s so over people putting limits and rules on those over a certain age when it comes to makeup.

Read on to find out which products Davy suggests for summer and why people over 50 can (and should) throw away this one pesky makeup “rule.”

Bold eyeshadow and glittery makeup are beauty products that aren't always correlated with people of a more mature age, however, according to Davy, there's no reason there should be an age limit on glitter.

“That rule is actually completely false and rooted in ageism," Davy tells Parade. "It’s 2024—people of any age can and should wear shimmer/glitter formulas.”

So, how can someone dip their toes (or faces?) into this sparkly trend (either again, or for the first time)?

GLITTERPUCK is my answer to the recurring debate of middle-aged people thinking they can’t or shouldn’t wear glitter/shimmer,” Davy says, recommending a “sparkly, pressed ‘grown-up’” glitter that adds sparkle to whichever part of your face or body you use it on.

It can be used as an eyeshadow, a highlight and just body glitter in general. Its color is described as “light peach with champagne reflects” and shows up on varying shades of skin tones as seen on Half Magic’s site.

Not only can middle-aged beauty lovers wear flashy makeup looks, but Davy shares that glitter makeup can really uplift anyone. (And with a color name like “Dopamine Sparkle,” who could argue that point?)

“It’s such an instant mood lift, it’s a celebration of yourself and a fantastic conversation starter,” Davy says about wearing a product like GLITTERPUCK. “The formula is so chic and high-end—it looks stunning on anyone—any skin tone, any skin age.”

Speaking of the major versatility of GLITTERPUCK Pressed Fairy Dust, Davy also shares that it’s “the absolute best for summer.”

“People immediately fall in love with this formula when they feel the water-infused texture and experience the super reflective twinkly sparkle with no fall-out if you apply with your finger,” Davy shares, also saying that she came up with the term “grown-up glitter” and that it continually sells out at Ulta.

Davy explains that you can use GLITTERPUCK by itself for a more subtle look, or you can use it with GLITTERPILL on top for a “more intense sparkle," depending on your preference.

“This is such a versatile product because you can use it all by itself or on top of any eyeshadow to add instant sparkle,” she says. “You can also layer other glitter products on top OR underneath it…”

How to Amplify Your Over-50 Sparkly Looks

“GLITTERPILL is a great product for people of all ages,” Davy tells Parade. “My mom wears this as eyeliner all the time. The buildable glitter gel has a mix of glitters of varying sizes and gorgeous and unique color combos. The formula is ophthalmologist-tested and approved, with no fall-out.”

But what if you want a summer look with these glittery products that are a little more “suitable” for everyday wear?

“The easiest and least intimidating way is to go ahead and do your everyday look, and then just top off your eyelids with GLITTERPUCK and/or pop a little GLITTERPILL in Microcosm (holographic silver) or Holy Goldie (holographic gold) on your inner eye,” she explains.
