Getting all dolled up is fun but also kind of stressful when there’s black tie attire involved. Black tie fashion implies a formal event, which comes with the pressure of dressing appropriately for said occasion.

“If you’re looking for inspiration, try reviewing a recent red carpet from a formal awards show like the Oscars or Grammys,” shares Lauren Chan, model, entrepreneur and size-inclusion advocate. These red carpets are full of celebrities who find fresh ways to push the boundaries of traditional black tie attire, while still looking elegant and respectful. For example, this year’s red carpets saw trends like the peplum waist and corset dresses dominate women’s silhouettes, while velvet and sequins added textural elements.

Meanwhile, men on the red carpets opted out of following the strict dress code, with some forgoing said black tie (and shirt) altogether and opting for daring, chest-baring looks. Others kept it classic with their clothes but mixed it up with their footwear, choosing patent boots or loafers. Of course, there were plenty of gents that followed the rules and looked dapper in bow ties and satin lapels too.

Whether you have a roster of black tie weddings on the calendar, a super fancy work event or an invitation to a ball (could happen!), we’re here to guide you through the ins and outs of the black tie dress code.

What is black tie attire?

Black tie attire is traditionally defined by formal evening wear. A “black tie required” dress code used to be quite rigid, with men required to don tuxedos and bow ties and women expected to wear floor-length gowns. While these are still the default rules, there’s more room for nuance, especially if the invite says “black tie preferred” or “black tie optional”. These two directions mean that men can wear a dark suit instead of a tux, and women can wear a formal dress, but it doesn’t necessarily have to be floor length.

“In my opinion, it’s always better to err on the side of being overdressed than underdressed. And it’s also important to keep the context of the event in mind,” celebrity stylist Ariel Tunnell explains. “Is it a black tie professional fundraiser? Best to stick to standard black tie. Is it an all-out destination wedding that’s the party of the year? If so, then you have a lot more freedom to interpret a formal dress code to fit your personality.”

Chan agrees that black tie attire has broadened its scope. “In my opinion, strict dress codes are a thing of the past — as are antiquated, binary norms of what men and women can wear,” Chan says. “When I see a ‘black tie’ direction on an invitation, I simply interpret it as a reminder to dress with the utmost respect.” Of course, it’s recommended to check with the host if you have any questions about what’s appropriate to wear.

Black tie dress code for men

If you’re sticking to the classics, a black tuxedo jacket and trousers, bow tie, cummerbund and shoes, contrasting a crisp white collared button down, comprise the blueprint of a black tie dress code for men.

Can you wear a suit rather than a tuxedo to a black tie event?

The style experts agreed that men can typically get away with wearing a black suit and bow tie or neck tie for a black tie event. (“To be honest, most folks can’t tell the difference between a tuxedo and a suit!” Chan says.)

Sticking to black will help a suit blend into the dress code. The important part is making sure your suit is formal enough for the occasion. Stick to wool suiting rather than a material that appears relaxed and casual, like linen.

Black tie dress code for women

“When it comes to [black tie] silhouettes, floor length is your safest bet,” Tunnell says, with fashion and jewelry designer Carla Rockmore and Schuppler agreeing. “And be mindful of the size of the skirt — ball gowns and trains are gorgeous but not if people are going to be stepping on your dress all night!” Tunnell also says midi and tea-length dresses may be appropriate depending on the occasion.

The style experts also noted that a well-tailored tux or suit on a woman can also abide by the formal black tie rules, if dresses aren’t your thing.

What is the best color to wear to a black tie event?

According to the style experts, your color palette for the event is up to you — unless it’s explicitly stated on the invitation.

“Traditional black tie dress code tends to evoke classic colors in formal wear: black, white, ivory, navy, red, etcetera,” Tunnell explains. “Modern black tie has evolved to include a range of colors and even patterns. It’s always important to keep the context of the event in mind.”

Rockmore encourages a more vibrant palette. “Black tie does not have to mean a black dress. Wear color for a change!” Schuppler also thinks going for something eye-catching and glitzy, with adornments like sequins and beading, is fair game.

Chan, on the other hand, thinks it’s best to take moderate approach. “I interpret ‘black tie’ as a sign of being respectful to the event, hosts and honorees, and outshining them is generally a no-no, as is being distracting from the cause/organization,” Chan explains.

What is the difference between black tie and white tie?

“Black tie is what most people consider formal wear. Dressy weddings, work or charity galas, awards shows, etcetera,” Tunnell says. “White tie is much less common and is reserved for the dressiest of events. Think royal affairs, state dinners and presidential galas. White tie is the most formal dress code and it’s also the most elegant and sophisticated with more rules than a black tie event.”

For example, a classic tuxedo won’t cut it for men — instead, they’re required to wear an evening tailcoat and high-waisted trousers. And the bow tie must be white. For women, don’t even think about showing the ankles — the gown must be floor length, and even better if it’s a ball gown.
