Community Calendar: Historic tours, Memorial Day, pancakes, tacos

May 24—Superior: The Barker's Island Farmers' Market runs 8:45 a.m. to noon near the SS Meteor.

Gordon: Take a Historic Walking Tour of downtown Gordon with historian Brian Finstad at 10 a.m., starting at the Depot. Admission is free, but donations to the Gordon-Wascott Historical Society are appreciated. The Whalen House Museum and Soo Line Railroad Depot are also open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

South Range: The annual Tri Lakes Community Center pancake breakfast runs 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at 7872 S. County Road A. All-you-can-eat pancakes are served with sausages and a choice of beverage. The cost is $7 per person; children age 3 and younger are free. Proceeds benefit the Summit and Oakland volunteer fire departments.

Gordon: Elyse and Heath Jensen host an open house 10 a.m. to noon at the Meffert Cabin, located across the Finstad Bridge at 14298 S. Finstad Drive. See the progress on the renovation of the historic home and learn more about the history of the Meffert family. Admission is free, but donations to the Gordon-Wascott Historical Society are appreciated. The Whalen House Museum and Soo Line Railroad Depot are also open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Douglas County: Lockman-Jensen American Legion Post 499 will present military honors at 8:30 a.m. at Wascott Cemetery, 9 a.m. at Gordon Cemetery, 10 a.m. at Bennett Lutheran Cemetery, 10:15 a.m. at the Bennett Cemetery, 10:45 a.m. at Solon Springs Evergreen Cemetery, and 11 a.m. at Solon Springs Catholic Cemetery.

Gordon: Immediately following the ceremony at the Gordon Cemetery, historian Doug MacDonald will lead a Historic Cemetery Walking Tour. Meet at the storage building in back of the Gordon Cemetery. Admission is free, but donations to the Gordon-Wascott Historical Society are appreciated. The Whalen House Museum and Soo Line Railroad Depot are also open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Superior: The Superior Downtown Farmers' Market runs from 10:45 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 1215 Banks Ave., east of the World of Wheels Skate Center.

Superior: U.S. Rep. Tom Tiffany, R-Wis., will have staff available 3-4 p.m. at the Superior Public Library to assist residents who need help with federal agencies such as Veterans Affairs, Social Security, Medicare and passports. No appointment is needed. If you can't make it there, call 715-298-9344 for assistance.

Superior: Holy Assumption Church is hosting a taco dinner 4:30-7 p.m. at 5601 Tower Ave. The menu includes three hard-shell or two soft-shell tacos with all the fixings, Mexican rice, refried beans, chips and salsa, beverage and dessert for $10 for adults, $5 for ages 8 and younger, and $3 for an extra taco. Takeout is available. Proceeds support church maintenance projects.
