Coast Guard Officers Who Rescued 'Shipping Container Dog' Give Her a Final Send Off

Coast Guard Officers at the Port of Houston were stunned when they heard something strange during their daily checks. It was a dog, now dubbed "Connie the Container Dog," hidden in one of the thousands of shipping containers at the port. And now they've gathered one final time to salute the dog before she headed off to find a permanent residence.

The find seemed like it was a one in a million chance. Tens of thousands of shipping containers vs. one small dog who managed to find help.

Coast Guard Officers at Coast Guard Sector Houston-Galveston gathered on February 6 to say goodbye to Connie, who was off to Virginia to find a forever home. Video on TikTok shows the officers giving the good girl some pets and scratches before she was boarded onto a private plane.

"The Coasties who rescued Connie the Container Dog bid fair winds and followings seas as she sets off to find her forever home," the video's poster @santanasbestfriend wrote in the caption.

According to NBC News, the pup was stuck in the shipping container for over a week before marine science technicians Bryan Wainscott, Lucas Loe, Ryan McMahon and Jose Reyes found her on January 31.

The group was busy "randomly selecting from thousands of shipping containers for inspection," a post on the U.S. Coast Guard of Heartland's Facebook page reads. "Suddenly, they heard barking and scratching coming from one of the containers in a stack. When they lowered the container and opened the door, a dog popped out!"

Connie was understandably tired and hungry when she the officers found her. She was also "very happy to see her rescuers."

"The Coast Guard members gave her water and brought her to a local animal shelter for further care," the statement reads. "Thanks to their actions, Connie the Container Dog is safe and sound!"

Connie was originally placed with a foster family, NBC 5 reports. And had rave reviews from her foster owner Jennifer Wendeburg.

“She’s been great, I have four kids, two dogs, a Great Dane and a Pit Bull mix and she’s been great with them, and a cat, so whoever is going to adopt her hit the jackpot,” she said.

As for the team who found her, they know that what happened that day was very special.

“If we didn’t find her that day she wouldn’t have been found at all, that’s what I think,” Marine Science Technician 2nd class Ryan McMahon told thew news outlet.

So we guess you could call this the lucky break that gave the pup a new "leash" on life.
