CLIP: Watch a Crowd of Surfers Paddle for Their Lives at Huge Mavericks

The huge swell that rocked California's coastline a couple of weeks ago was so bombing, so chaotic, that the dust still hasn't settled.

While ballsy surfers charged Mavericks, the swell wreaked havoc all over the place.

At the legendary big wave spot, badass Bianca Valenti endured a gnarly wipeout, an underground charger nailed the "bomb of the day," and a longtime Mavs surfer pulled off an insane airdrop. Meanwhile, the ginormous waves didn't discriminate and farther south, inflicted chaos on trucks and animals.

The latest throwback to the swell is in the clip above posted by the Mavericks Awards. It's captioned:

"The lineup of big wave surfers scramble for safety as a huge set wave approaches at Mavericks in Half Moon Bay, CA on 1.5.2024."

The clip's short and sweet at 30 seconds long. It portrays a scenario most surfers have faced, that moment you're on the inside and a huge set wave pops up as someone in the lineup yells, "Outside!"

Fear and instinct both kick and you think, "Oh f*ck, I better get out there." And you paddle towards the outside for dear life.

But while most surfers probably thought that about a wave that in reality, was maybe a whopping double overhead, the surfers above are scrambling for their lives at massive Mavericks.

Founded by Jeff Clark and Chris Cuvelier, the Mavericks Awards is a digital video performance contest in which big-wave surfers and videographers submit their best surf content from Mavericks from the entire winter season.
