Clip: Surfer Turns into Human Torpedo in Precarious Puerto Escondido Wipeout

Puerto Escondido, aka the Mexican Pipeline, is capital “H” heavy.

It’s more of a gladiator pit, than a surf spot. Or a minefield. Or a shooting gallery with the surfers being the targets, the waves the ammunition, and nowhere to run.

And that’s just paddling out in the lineup, not to mention actually catching a wave.

Above, we see an example of when things go wrong at Puerto. It’s not quite as cinematic as the airdrop of death seen from Nathan Florence earlier this year, but it’s still in the horror genre – the unidentified surfer skips down the face like a stone on Walden Pond. Except it’s much less peaceful and poetic than Thoreau; it’s straight up violence.

“Eeeeek is he ok?” wrote one commenter.

Previously, we reported on South African charger Matt Bromley and the horrors of his board spearing him in the head at Playa Zicatela. Like we said, Heavy.

And the clip above comes along with an entire 12-minute raw edit at Puerto, featuring wipeouts, drop-ins, carnage, and glory during the recent run of swell.

As Surfer’s Zander Morton wrote:

“In the raw and unedited 12-minute clip above, we get a feel for what it's like watching massive Puerto from the beach. During one massive set, we see Matt Bromley take the tip of his surfboard to the head, and the lineup come to his rescue (see the aftermath below). During the next huge set to roll through, two surfers launch themselves over the falls and into oblivion. In-between those, a few surfers pick off insiders (which are still massive by normal standards), and manage to actually make it out of their tubes.”

Puerto strikes again.
