City's 'Cleanup Week' starts Tuesday

May 6—The time is now for a little spring cleaning — or even a lot — in the city of Meadville.

Free and discounted rates are available for hard-to-dispose-of items during an expanded "Cleanup Week" event.

In cooperation with several area businesses and government entities, Meadville Beautification Committee has planned multiple days designed to help residents get organized, get rid of unwanted stuff, and get chores crossed off the family to-do list.

The events begin Tuesday and culminate in the city's annual cleanup day on Saturday.

Here's what's happening:

—Tuesday: Unlimited electronics — with the exception of just one TV per household — can be recycled for free at Lincoln Recycling, 986 N. French St. The recycling center offers a drop-and-go site where city residents may recycle computers, telephones, DVD players and more. Working flat-screen televisions, however, should be taken to Women's Services Inc. on Friday.

—Wednesday: Tri-County Industries Inc. will accept large household appliances such as ovens, refrigerators, washers and dryers between 8 a.m and noon at the Public Works garage, 1340 S. Cottage St., for a discounted rate. To participate, the $20 tickets must be purchased with cash only at Meadville Market House. A ticket is required for each appliance. A total of 30 tickets are available to city residents. There is no purchase limit per resident for this first-come, first-served opportunity. Appliances with Freon are acceptable.

—Thursday: Tires can be recycled for a discounted rate of $2 per tire at Flynn's Tire & Auto Service, 1158 Park Ave. The first 10 tires will be free.

Also, clean and functional home goods can be donated at Women's Services Inc., 204 Spring St. Microwaves, appliances, TVs, dishes, cups and silverware are all welcome. TVs are most in demand, according to the Beautification Committee.

—Saturday: The annual cleanup day for city residents takes place at the Public Works garage from 8 a.m. to noon. The city will accept construction materials such as bricks, concrete blocks, shingles and dried paint cans, mattresses, batteries, yard waste and organic materials. Each vehicle load is $10 and residents must provide proof of city residency. Unacceptable items include electronics, fluorescent light bulbs, tires, household trash, clothing, appliances with Freon, and thermostats with mercury.
