Choosing quality time over gifts on Mother’s Day

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — As Mother’s Day takes over stores, others opt for more creative presents.

Cathy Hunt spends this special day creating art with her daughters.

“I’ve always thought that painting with your kids and your parents is such a great bonding time.” said Cathy Hunt.

20 years ago, Hunt opened Color Me Mine, and got a nice surprise.

“I’m not very artistic but my kids are artistic,” said Hunt. “I didn’t really realize it until I opened this studio and my girls came and worked with me, and turned out they’re both very artistic, beautiful handwriting and all of that.”

2024 Spring Fest continues this weekend at Kern County Fairgrounds

Now she sees other moms getting the same experience.

“It’s really special to watch them when they’re painting, visiting in a way that they don’t always do when they’re home, ” said Hunt. “We do have a lot of people that come every year for this Mother’s Day event, some other seasonal events, and the most fun thing is when people bring their babies in.”

A bond only mothers can understand.

“That’s been my greatest joy. I have two daughters and they are just so precious,” said Hunt. Seeing what great mothers my daughters turned out to be is really wonderful.”

Even though this is a full house on Mother’s Day, Hunt still tries to break away for a moment and enjoy a brunch with her family.

“I think people are finding that spending money at the mall as opposed to having an activity to do together is…this is just so much better,” said Hunt.
