Chilean Ski Resort Recounts "Snowiest September We've Seen In Years"

Yesterday, September 19th, Ski Portillo, Chile, shared an Instagram post documenting the "snowiest September we've seen in years."

As you might expect, lots of snow translates to one thing and one thing only: powder skiing.

Here's the recap featuring members of the Blizzard Tecnica team.

Ski Portillo, among other South American resorts, enjoyed an incredible turn of fortunes earlier this winter (that's this past summer for us tuning in from North America).

Early in the season, the Chilean resort struggled with low snowfall and warm temperatures. By August, the winter was looking like a wash. Then, the storm hit, depositing multiple feet of snow at ski resorts in Chile and Argentina.

The August battering treated Ski Portillo well -- by the time the clouds cleared, the resort had seen roughly eight feet of snow, coming in a close second in total storm snowfall to Argentina's Las Leñas.

And this initial comeback storm wasn't a fluke. Throughout September, the snow has continued to fall at Ski Portillo. A recent storm cycle buried the meter stick an additional five feet, allowing the resort to extend its operating season until October 1st. Typically, the resort closes in mid-September.

Watching our South American friends live their wildest fantasies is bittersweet.

On one hand, good for them -- it's not often that you see a "meh" ski season transform into a noteworthy, powder-laden affair.

On the other..., man, I'm just jealous.

It's tough getting through the last hot days of summer knowing that somewhere in the world, someone's struggling to breathe because the snow's so deep. Anticipation for the North American ski season, if it wasn't already, is at an all-time high.
