Chatty Sea Lion Shows off His Many Different Voices at Aquarium of the Pacific

There's nothing cuter than an animal talking, especially if it's one that you least expect to be chatty! Aquarium of the Pacific is located in Long Beach, California, and as a born and bred Southern California girl, it is always one of my favorite aquariums to visit. They shared a video at the beginning of January 2024 introducing us to Chase the sea lion and showed off his many different voices.

From the classic bark to a snarl and what sounds like a frog's croak, Chase loves to chat with his handlers and friends. Wait till you hear his little "ooooooo" - it sounds like he's singing a song!

So cute, right?! And doesn't it look like he's smiling? I could watch him all day. I wonder if they trained him to do that or if he just does it on his own. He seems very happy, but I wonder if any of those sounds mean that he's angry. I had no idea that sea lions could makes so many different noises! Commenters also loved the short and sweet video. One said, "It's good to know this sea puppy does the same "ooooo" and small "ooo" as land puppies". And a ton of people agreed with what @Theo had to say, "Oh my god “oooo but smaller” I'm gonna cry!!!"

More About the Aquarium of the Pacific

Like I said, I love the Aquarium of the Pacific! We moved out of California about 5 years ago, but we held annual passes to the aquarium for at least 10 years or so prior to us leaving. There's so much to see and do there, and there are many interactive exhibits so that you can touch and feel the sea life. There are a couple of very large shark and ray petting tanks...that was always the first thing my kids wanted to check out every time we went. You can feed the cute little lorikeet birds that will land right on you. There's a huge whale skeleton in the center of the aquarium to put there enormous size into perspective, an amazing gift shop, educational shows you can sit down and watch with your family, and so many cool animals to learn about.

Don't miss seeing the funny penguins play, and the sea otters are a must see, too. You've gotta check out the shark lagoon, and make sure to see a sea lion show. And if you're lucky, you may get to see the giant California octopus, though she doesn't like coming out very often.

Bonus points because this aquarium is located surrounded by restaurants and shops, and there are many cool beaches nearby. On a good day, you might be able to see Catalina Island in the distance. And while you're there head over and check out the historical ship Queen Mary - she's just right down the road. It's a fun way to spend a day or two!
