Central IL dietician warns of added sugars in schools

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — After a decision made by the Biden administration last week, it looks like chocolate milk will be here to stay in school lunch programs. Now, one Central Illinois dietician is urging parents to monitor sugar intake.

Regular milk is a great source of calcium and vitamin D. Flavored milk has several added sugars, and the Biden administration is looking for ways to reduce it.

Clinical Dietitian Jason Crum said parents should pay attention to the sugars their kids are consuming.

“[We’ve got] the childhood obesity, and we’ve got, you know, child diabetes,” he said. “The added sugars, they show up very quickly in how the blood sugar goes up.”
