CCE Schuyler to offer discounted compost bins to residents

SCHUYLER COUNTY, N.Y. (WETM) – Cornell Cooperative Extension of Schuyler County will be offering residents the opportunity to purchase a discounted compost bin this May.

The organization will offer Earth Machine Compost Bins to residents in Schuyler County at a discounted rate of $59.95 through a bulk sale and distribution with CCE Cayuga and CCE Seneca.

Composting provides residents with a way to reduce the amount of waste to dispose of while also converting it into a product that can be useful for other activities such as gardening, landscaping or use with house plants.

“Composting our food waste is one way to take responsibility for the waste we produce,” says Ryan Staychock, Environmental and Natural Resources Educator for Cornell Cooperative Extension. “Cornell Cooperative Extension is here to help you compost correctly so you can feel good about doing your part to reduce organic materials in our waste stream.”

Preorders for the bins will begin on May 1 and will run until May 31.

When ordering, residents should note that bins are limited to one per household. An additional discount will be applied to the first 10 customers who live in the Village of Montour Falls thanks to the Sustainable Montour Falls Committee.

Once the bin is preordered and paid for online, the resident must choose a pick-up time for their bin. Pick-up will take place on June 19 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

CCE staff will be available during pick-up to help hand out take-home composting educational material and to help load the bins into vehicles.
