Cartoonist pays emotional tribute to Barbara Bush and her daughter who died at age 3

Not all tributes to the late Barbara Bush have gone over well, but this one has.

A drawing by editorial cartoonist Marshall Ramsey of the Clarion-Ledger in Jackson, Miss., is going viral because of its touching depiction of the former first lady, who died April 17 at age 92, reuniting with her late daughter Robin Bush in heaven.

Robin, her second child with husband George H.W. Bush and younger sister to George W. Bush, died in 1953 at age 3 after a battle with leukemia.

The cartoon highlights the Bush matriarch’s lesser-known role as a bereaved mother, and has been praised as a heart-wrenching yet thoughtful response to her death.

Members of the Bush family are among those expressing appreciation for the emotional image. Granddaughter Jenna Bush Hager — whose father, the 43rd president, was just 7 when his sister died — shared Ramsey’s drawing on Instagram with a sweet note.

Christened Pauline Robinson Bush, the second of the six Bush offspring inspired her mother to raise awareness for leukemia research. The Robin Bush Child and Adolescent Center at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in the Bush hometown of Houston is named in her memory.
