Burger King's 'April Fools' Burger Is Now a Real Menu Item

But only for a limited time.

Believe us, working in the food world is pretty fun on April Fools Day (if you haven’t seen our quick and easy snack idea or reinvented ice cream sandwich yet, you’re in for a treat). April 1 is the one time of year we can dream up the craziest, quirkiest foods imaginable with no repercussions—after all, it's just for fun.

But, this year, when the notorious pranksters at Burger King launched their holiday scheme, fans weren’t shocked, horrified, or disgusted—they were totally on board. And while, at first, the strange new sandwich seemed like fast food fiction, fans were delighted to find out Burger King actually turned it into a reality.

Burger King Launches the ‘Fake Burger’

In a shocking turn of April Fools' prank events, the Fake Burger has officially made it to the Burger King menu. The burger patty-less burger features two slices of Gouda cheese, crispy French fries, and a drizzle of smoky BBQ sauce, all sandwiched between a soft sesame seed bun.

Sounds pretty delicious, right? One social media user hilariously called it the ”'I'm hungry, but have nothing in the house’ snack.” But, still, others found the sandwich “highly acceptable,” saying, “I’d definitely eat 5 of them at least.” “That's so dumb, I'll take 14,” another commenter joked. It kind of feels like poutine put on a burger bun, and that’s something we’d never complain about.

But, to several BK fans, the sandwich didn’t look bizarre at all—it was just as recognizable as the Whopper itself.

“Is that not just a chip butty?,” one Reddit user asked, referring to the beloved U.K. sandwich of crispy fries on buttered bread. And it turns out, other countries have their own names for the creation as well. “In South Africa we just call these chip rolls,” someone commented. “Chip sanga in the part of [Australia] that I’m from,” said another.

What we're learning here is that the U.S. is, in fact, the last country on the French fry sandwich train, and that we need to hop on board ASAP. “As someone who’s not a big meat eater, I’d love this,” one fan shared.

Now for the bad news: the Fake Burger is only available at participating locations in Japan. Yep, just add it to the list of international food items we have to envy from afar. The limited-time burger is rumored to be a steal too, costing the equivalent of around $2.50 in U.S. dollars.

“Welp, I'm going to Japan,” one user declared.

According to a Japanese news outlet, this is actually the Fake Burger's second iteration too, returning after a limited-time release in Japan four years ago. After undergoing an "evolution," the beef-less burger is back and more flavorful than ever.

So, perhaps this wasn't as much an April Fools prank gone right as it was part of BK’s master marketing scheme. Regardless, we can’t wait until the King brings its Fake Burger/chip butty/chip sanga to the States for us to enjoy as well.
