Boating season is here: Friends of the Chicago River offer tips on keeping waterways clean

CHICAGO — Wednesday, May 1 is the official start of boating season in Chicago.

While the lake is a big attraction, boaters are spending time along the river as well, as bridges and landmarks make it one of the most beautiful spots in Chicago.

Margaret Frisbie, executive director of Friends of the Chicago River joined WGN Evening News at 4 p.m. to discuss the start of boating season and tips on how to keep the Chicago River clean.

“Boaters are really careful. Those are people who are out there a lot, on the water and they see what is going on. They’ve seen the improvements themselves,” Frisbie said. “And so, there is no real intentional source of litter. It’s really about wind-blown pollution. So, where did the garbage end up? Where did it come from?”
