Carolina Gonzalez is a makeup artist to the stars, painting the faces of Gigi Hadid, Blake Lively, Alexandra Daddario, Kate Hudson, and more. So, when she told me she relied on a $14 drugstore moisturizing lotion, I was shocked.

“Drugstore products can be just as effective as luxury ones when it comes to skincare if they are coming from a dermatologist-recommended brand,” said Gonzalez. The brand she’s specifically referencing? Cetaphil. “[The brand’s] products are great for those with sensitive skin… so I know that no matter what my client’s skin type is, I can feel good about prepping with them,” she continued. Though, one of Gonzalez’ go-to products that specifically caught my attention was the Cetaphil Daily Oil-Free Hydrating Lotion.

The non-comedogenic face moisturizer is packed with hyaluronic acid, offers a 24-hour wear time, and fights dry, irritated, and rough skin. The formula eliminates the use of oil and fragrance, delivering a simple concoction that “absorbs quickly into skin and leaves it feeling soft and supple,” according to Gonzalez. She continued to call it one of her favorites since it doesn’t feel heavy and “locks in moisture leaving skin super hydrated.” Best of all, your skin is guaranteed to drink the Cetaphil lotion right up, helping to maintain a “healthy and hydrated skin barrier,” Gonzalez explained.

Over 19,300 reviewers seem to agree, giving the lotion a perfect five-star rating. “I have been using Cetaphil Daily Hydrating Lotion for my face for several weeks now, and it has become a fundamental part of my daily skincare routine,” wrote a shopper who continued to say the product “stands out for its gentle formula” and “effective hydration.” Someone else called it a moisturizer their skin can “actually tolerate,” explaining that other products pill and are “too thick,” while someone else shared that the “moisturizing effect lasts for a whole day.”

If you like wearing makeup, you’ll be happy to learn that the lotion works phenomenally under tons of products, too, leading Gonzalez to call it “a great base” and “better foundation” for makeup. (Fun fact: Gonzalez prepped Sabrina Carpenter’s skin with it during Coachella weekend one — and her beauty look lasted through the full desert climate set!)
