Beyoncé’s Double Denim Suit Is a Little Bit Madonna and a Whole Lot Country

Beyoncé’s country era is giving us dance, it’s giving us joy, and it’s giving us buckets of fashion inspiration.

For her latest Cowboy Carter-inspired ’fit, the superstar brought back the double denim trend of the early aughts—but with a cowboy spin. The look was a blue denim set with a rinsed, vintage finish: a cropped Marine Serre jacket and high-waisted Y/Project jeans. The button-up jacket featured a corset-like bodice, patchwork denim in the arms and bust—where a cone bra moment, à la Madonna, was the highlight—and a subtle print in the French brand’s signature moon motif. The pants, meanwhile, were adorned with asymmetric diagonal cut-out details in white along the front.

And the denim didn’t end there. Peeking out from under the pants were pointy denim pumps, and on Bey’s hand, a small version of Balenciaga’s Hourglass denim bag.

The singer finished the All-American look with a chic white Stetson cowboy hat, metallic-rim shades, a massive silver chain necklace, and a bold red lip. But her most shocking accessory of all was a giant American flag, which she even fashioned into a scarf at one point during her photo shoot—a clip of which she shared on Instagram. Now, while the U.S. flag has been given a dark, Trump-y context since 2016 thanks to extremist Republicans, Beyoncé’s Western era promises to take us back to non-ironic, non-problematic patriotism, when country music was born from camaraderie amongst working-class, blue-collar Americans in the farms and city outskirts, their songs telling tales of finding moments of joy in everyday life.

The singer’s Cowboy Carter album title, while of course a nod to her and husband Jay-Z’s last name, also nods to the Carter Family, an iconic country music group from the 1930s-50s made up of different family members from musician A.P. Carter’s family.

“4 days until act ii COWBOY CARTER,” Beyoncé captioned her Instagram post featuring a slideshow of photos from a recent photo shoot. In some snaps, she also poses with a little rainbow flag and a Yuki No Bosha Sake bottle.
