Anti-abortion activists slam Bette Midler for calling them ‘Neanderthals’: ‘You really hate children, don’t you?’

Bette Midler is the latest celebrity to speak out against new abortion bans in Georgia and Alabama.

The singer and actress, who has never shied away from criticizing Donald Trump and other conservatives, posted an expletive-filled tweet on Wednesday slamming anti-abortion activists who call themselves “pro-life.” According to Midler, 73, the lawmakers who voted to criminalize abortion are “Neanderthals” who care more about letting a baby be born than actually providing necessities like health care or education for it afterwards.

Midler’s heated message predictably stirred up some intense debate. Anti-abortion organization American Life League accused the Beaches star of hating children, though many fans voiced agreement with her statement.

It’s not Midler’s first comment on the issue. Last week she shared supermodel Gigi Hadid’s statement supporting abortion rights — though Hadid noted that she opposes late-term abortion — and added “It’s amazing that men still think they have agency over women and their bodies in this day and age.”
