BRONX, N.Y. (PIX11) – Orchard Beach in the Bronx is one of those reliable watering holes where the evolution of a borough, from generation to generation, is on full display to be seen – and heard.

When it comes to playing your music this Memorial Day holiday weekend, it’s either go loud or go home.

NYC to ease lifeguard requirements to keep beaches open

Up on the boardwalk, PIX11 News met two Shirleys. They spell their names differently and say they’ve been waiting for this beautiful weather for months.

“This winter has been – wintering. The spring has not sprung on us. We’re going to skip spring to go into summer,” said Shirley, who lives in the Bronx.

Down on the sand, closer to the still chilly ocean – we met early birds.

“We came out here around 8:30 a.m. I enjoyed it. This is the best beach in the world,” said fellow Bronx resident Frank Montanaro.

A couple of miles away, the quaint – and popular neighborhood of City Island is putting its best foot forward for the official kick-off weekend to start the summer.

Skip Giacco, the owner of the immensely popular Lickety Split ice cream shop, is gearing up to open on Saturday, fully prepared for what he anticipates to be a bustling, non-stop summer.

“For 20 years, my wife and I have done this. It’s all about the kids,” said Giacco.

Skip’s business, and City Island in general, boasts a reputation that stretches beyond the five boroughs.
