The Grimm Variations girl running

AnimeJapan, a big anime consumer show in Tokyo, took place over the weekend, and was packed with announcements. While none of those announcements were particularly huge – there was no news on Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card season 2 or the One Piece anime remake – there were a few sneak peaks and announcements throughout.

Of course, there were a lot of things that were on the smaller side, too, and some that weren’t super interesting, so we’ve gone through and picked out what we think were the best announcements at AnimeJapan 2024.

Monogatari New Trailer

After a strange set of teasers, Monogatari was announced to be returning with a new adaptation of the series’ Off Season and Monster Season, something fans have been waiting for seemingly forever. After the official announcement earlier in the year, we finally have a trailer and a gorgeous key visual. It looks wonderful.

Black Butler Season 4 New Trailer

Another one that’s seemingly taken forever to get here, the new season of Black Butler has had a new trailer revealed, alongside the new opening song for the season. The Public School arc looks to be the most interesting season of the series yet, and the trailer is fantastic. We’re only a couple of weeks away from the premiere – April 13, 2024 – so it won’t be long before we get to see it in full.

Blue Exorcist Season 4

The Shimane Illuminati Saga of Blue Exorcist only just ended on Saturday, and now we know it’s coming back for a fourth season. Blue Exorcist: Beyond the Snow is set to premiere later this year, in October 2024, and we have a brief teaser for the new season. It’s going to be a long wait.

Dungeon People First Trailer

We’re in a golden age of dungeon-based manga, with series like Delicious in Dungeon blowing up over the last few months, but there’s another series on the way that looks amazing. The first ever trailer for Dungeon People was released at AnimeJapan, and sees a young thief named Clay accidentally falling into the role of a dungeon caretaker, interviewing monsters and setting traps for any would-be adventurers. It looks both adorable and amazing, and we’re excited to check it out when it premieres in July.

The Grimm Variations

Grimm Variations might be the coolest thing on this list. It’s an anthology series from WIT Studio and CLAMP, with each of the six episodes focusing on a different Brothers Grimm fairytale. It’s coming to Netflix on April 17, and we have our first trailer below, showing us a twisted anime take on Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Hansel and Gretel, The Elves and the Shoemaker, The Town Musicians of Bremen, and the Pied Piper of Hamelin.

My Hero Academia Season 7 Trailer

Of course, we couldn’t talk about AnimeJapan without acknowledging the elephant in the room: My Hero Academia. It’s coming back on May 4, 2024, with Studio BONES coming back to anime, and we have a new trailer. It looks great, as you’d expect from BONES, but it’s hard to gauge if there’s much of an appetite for MHA, especially with new kid Jujutsu Kaisen on the block.
