Beer-Drinking Monkey Spotted on the Loose in Indianapolis

Authorities in Indianapolis had their hands full this week when an escaped pet monkey on the lam began terrorizing residents on the east side of the city. The ordeal came to an end when the monkey, named Momo was finally apprehended on Thursday, but not before some, shall we say, interesting sightings.

One local resident, Bonnie Wright, told Fox 29 News that she called 911 four separate times on Wednesday evening—when she believed that her initial calls weren't being taken seriously—after finding Momo in her garage. It wasn't until she noted that several people had been attacked that police responded.

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department confirmed that some minor injuries had been reported, but did not say whether Momo bit anyone while on the loose.

Another neighbor located about a quarter mile away from where Momo escaped likewise reported seeing a monkey "drinking a beer out of a garbage can."

At one point, the simian was spotted running down the street with officers in hot pursuit, but jumped into a tree when it was startled by barking dogs. An Indianapolis Animal Care Services transport vehicle arrived at the scene, as did Momo’s owner, who attempted to coax him out with a peach.

Finally, Momo was safely captured late Thursday morning, according to a Facebook updated posted by the department. "That was more than enough monkey business for us, the posted quipped, thanking residents for their assistance in the matter.

According to IndyStar, Indianapolis municipal code does allow for the ownership of "wild or dangerous" animals, but requires them to be registered with the animal care services. The code also states that it is unlawful to own more than two dangerous animals in the city at any time, and owners are also supposed to post signage regarding the animal or animals.
