Beaver County Farmers Markets return April 27: Here's what's new and who's returning

Fresh-picked and succulent fruits, nutritious vegetables, artisan baked breads, homemade honey and other edible treats await as the Beaver County Farmers Markets return for the season, starting April 27.

Beaver and Ambridge remain the two biggies.

Farmers will set up tables at five locations during specific hours:

  • Ambridge, at the parking lot of St. Mary’s Catholic Church on Park Road, 4-7 p.m. Thursdays, beginning May 2 to Nov. 26.

  • Beaver, at the county Court House parking lot, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays, beginning April 27 to Dec. 21.

  • Beaver Falls in the parking lot behind Brodhead Apartments on Eighth Avenue, 3-6 p.m. Mondays from May 6 to Nov. 18.

  • Chippewa Township, in the parking lot of Chippewa United Methodist Church on Darlington Road, 3-6 p.m. Tuesdays from May 7 to Nov. 26.

  • New Brighton, in the parking lot of Diamond Milling on Fifth Avenue, 3-6 p.m. Tuesdays from May 7 to Nov. 19.

Who's new

Three new vendors have joined this year.

Brown Bear Bread, owned by Kate Clemmons, will sell breads at the Ambridge, Beaver and Chippewa markets.

Megan Epley will sell cut flowers at the Chippewa market.

Crooked Creek Herbals, owned by Kim Salvati, will selling organic hand-blended teas and tisanes at the Beaver market. Tisanes are beverages made from the infusion of leaves, roots, berries and spices of other plants.

Returning vendors

Thirty-two vendors will return from last year, some having been regulars for decades.

Fitzgibbon Meadery, mead, wine, Viking horns, Ambridge and Beaver.

Gray Goat BBQ, seasonings, barbecue sauces, goat milk fudge, sandwiches, Ambridge, Beaver and Chippewa.

Habrle Brothers Farm, produce, Beaver.

Harley’s Oak Spring Farm, produce, plants, crafts, cut flowers, Ambridge, Beaver, Beaver Falls, Chippewa, New Brighton.

Also know this

As in prior years, pets, including held or leashed dogs, are not permitted in market areas.

Penn State Extension will conduct cooking demonstrations at the Beaver and Ambridge markets.

The Farmers Market Nutrition Program vouchers will be available, likely in either June or July. Have interested parties check the Beaver County Farmers Market website for information or contact the Beaver County Office of Aging.

SNAP tokens

Also new, at the Ambridge market only: Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) tokens will be accepted by vendors who enroll. SNAP helps eligible low-income households buy nutritious food. Those who are eligible receive an Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) access card.

Beaver County Farmers Markets will collaborate with the Greater Pittsburgh Food Bank and Riverwise of Beaver County to accept SNAP/EBT tokens, intended for recipients to be able to purchase directly from local growers and vendors.

Riverwise will be at the Ambridge market to distribute tokens to eligible recipients. Currently, 10 of the Ambridge vendors are enrolled to accept SNAP, a voluntary program. The program should start early this summer when there's an abundance of local products available for purchase. For more information on Riverwise, go to GetRiverWise.com.
