Beach Bites: King Kong Sushi

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) — From hand-crafted sushi rolls, to unique cocktails, to a friendly welcoming environment, this restaurant on the Grand strand has it all, and even has the accolades to show for it.

King Kong Sushi is known locally for its unique and beautifully crafted sushi rolls for the past 16 years.

“Locals love us,” General Manager Darren Montgomery said. “But then again, we are the best sushi restaurant in Myrtle Beach.”

Sushi is their specialty. Using the freshest ingredients, sticky rice and sushi grade fish, not only will it melt in your mouth, it’ll leave you speechless after the first bite.

“They know exactly how to create the dish to where it is eye-appealing, taste, freshness and color,” Montgomery said. “Everything you can imagine, we have here at King Kong Sushi.”

Executive David Deguia makes sure he serves the best of the best.

“My thing at King Kong is if it’s not good enough for me, it’s not good enough for anyone else,” he said.

While Deguia and his multi-national team challenge themselves by creating new rolls, others have been in the menu since the beginning.

And if you don’t love sushi — don’t worry. They have something for everyone, including hibachi, steaks and more!

While ginger may be the thing that clears your palate in between different sushi rolls, so does a cold, refreshing cocktail.

At King Kong Sushi, their bar speaks for itself. Each season they rotate the drink selections and add a little flare to their drinks to stand out.

“We have our scorpion bowl that is topped with 190 proof liquor which comes on fire,” Bar Manager Sara Weld said. “The people who come in because they love the food, they love the drinks, they love chatting with us. They feel welcome. They feel like their family, part of the King Kong family.”

At King Kong Sushi, people come for more than just the food.

“I just love the food, the atmosphere and the people here,” Lisa Maynard said. “From the workers to the regulars, it is such an inviting atmosphere to come and just relax and have excellent food while you’re doing it.”

Montgomery coined the phrase “We are united. We are Strong. We are King Kong.”

“We’re a company that has been in business for 16 years and counting,” Montgomery said. “We want to go another 100 years.”

If you haven’t tried sushi, this may be just the place for you. Take it from Maynard, one of their regulars.

“I never ate sushi until a friend recommended I come here,” Maynard said. “I can’t believe I had never tried it. But then again, I think I waited until the best place to have sushi and realized how good it really can be.”

Deguia says some new items will be added to the menu in the coming weeks.

You can find King Kong Sushi just off of Highway 501 North in Myrtle Beach, or at their second location at Broadway at the Beach.
