2022’s The Batman from Matt Reeves is easily the best Batman film ever made, and when its sequel was announced, fans were elated. It was initially planned to be released in 2025, but it looks like fans will be waiting a little bit longer.

According to a new report from Deadline, The Batman 2 has been delayed from October 23, 2025 to a whole year later, October 2, 2026. Deadline reports that the delay is because of last year’s two strikes, the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, delaying production across the industry.

The Batman was very well received by fans and critics alike, with Robert Pattinson’s performance as Bruce Wayne/Batman being praised in particular. Pattinson is expected to reprise the role in future sequels.

It’s also spawned two spin-off series, which are in various stages of development. The first is The Penguin, which will see Colin Farrell reprising his role as the eponymous Penguin, a shady businessman and one of Batman’s most iconic villains. It’s set to start airing on Max later this year.

The second is a police procedural drama focused on the Gotham City Police Department. That one is apparently still in the early stages of development, and no release date has been set yet.

It comes at an interesting time for superhero movies, with waning interest among fans translating into some pretty high-profile box office bombs recently. The Marvels is probably the biggest of these bombs, but we’ve also seen poor performances from films like Madame Web, which led to star Dakota Johnson saying she probably won’t do another superhero film in the future.

That’s probably why we’ve got only a few superhero films coming out this year, only one of which is from Marvel — Deadpool & Wolverine. That’s a pretty drastic step back from years past, which saw two or more films from both Marvel and DC released, but hey, at least Sony is still plodding along with its Sony Spider-Man Universe.
