Larian Studios, the developer behind last year’s megahit Baldur’s Gate 3, has started work on its next two games. Swen Vincke, founder of Larian Studios, has already started teasing its next RPG, revealing that it may be too ambitious for the current-gen consoles.

Speaking to Gamespot at GDC, Vincke said that he’s expecting the next generation of consoles to help Larian achieve its vision. This comes after Vincke revealed that Larian will be moving away from the Dungeons & Dragons IP, choosing not to make Baldur's Gate 4 or any DLC for the current game.

"I think there is some tech that we don't have yet," he said. "And I don't know what the specs are on the next gen [of gaming systems] yet, but I hope that it's going to bring us closer."

Speaking to Eurogamer, Vincke later clarified his statements regarding the game dwarfing BG3 in comparison.

"So it's not a very big RPG that will dwarf them all, that we're making now - I mean like, we have a couple, we have two games that we want to make - and [that] we actually intended on after making BG3, so we're just back on that track now. They're big and ambitious, that's for sure. But I mean, I think scope-wise, BG3's probably already good enough!"

Baldur’s Gate 3 is already an ambitious title, and it’s bringing current-gen consoles to their knees while running it. The game pushes the CPU hard, bringing the frame rate on PS5 and Xbox Series X down to the cinematic 20fps range when traversing its eponymous city. We’ve already started to see games hitting the boundaries of what current consoles can offer, especially when it comes to pushing the CPU. Capcom’s Dragon’s Dogma 2 is another systems-driven game that, along with due to optimization issues, is bringing the heat to the current consoles.

As for what kind of tech we can expect from new consoles, many rumors and leaks have pointed to Microsoft pushing AI and machine learning for its next console. Sony is already starting to experiment with that tech with the upcoming PS5 Pro, which has been rumored to include an AI-based image upscaler to improve game performance.

Whatever the case may be, Larian isn't done with Baldur's Gate 3 yet. The developer continues to release new updates for the game, adding new endings and quality-of-life features to the game.
