All About Art: David Tillinghast’s dynamic creations ... and a Clemson legend

Originally from Memphis, Tenn., David Tillinghast is an artist deeply rooted in creativity and expression who found his way home to the serene mountains of Seneca, S.C.

And while he is presenting at Artisphere as an Emerging Artist, he brings a unique perspective and passion to his dynamic, captivating creations.

His work is legendary at Clemson University, where he earned a masters in Fine Arts in 1994. A 2001 multi-part installation on the school’s campus includes both a landmark 20-foot-tall brick silo and library volume initially filled with prints of wild plants that has evolved into Clemson's “Secret Book.” Decades of students have contributed words, sketches, signatures and mementoes to P211.t45, transforming it into something far beyond the original.

David’s journey as an artist has included imaginative sculptures that explore the intricate interplay of metals, stones, wood, clay, moss and more.

Over time, he has embraced new mediums, including painting, drawing and mixed media, an expanding repertoire that shows fearless exploration of form and texture.

David says he finds inspiration in the world around him, from the play of light and shadow on a wall to the timeless beauty of Medieval Architecture and the masterpieces of the Renaissance.

He draws from a rich tapestry of artistic traditions, paying homage to Earth Artists, reflecting on current events and finding resonance in the works of Expressionist painters such as Bosch, Bruegel, El Greco, and more.
