Arbor Day Fair, celebrating Portuguese culture, 'Yart Sale' in Marion: Things To Do

This week, we’ve got tree-planting and more at an Arbor Day Fair in Kennedy Park in Fall River. Plus, concerts, art, theater, and even an event celebrating Portuguese culture and poetry.

Arbor Day Fair and Clean-Up in Fall River

The City of Fall River is collaborating with the Tree Division to host an Arbor Day Fair and Clean-Up on Saturday, April 27, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Kennedy Park Pavilion.

Mayor Paul Coogan will read a proclamation, and then residents can participate in tree-planting, activities, demonstrations, and a clean-up of Kennedy Park.

There will also be a seedling giveaway: 200 seedlings will be available, on a first-come, first-served basis.

The Fall River Public Library Bookmobile and food trucks will also be there. The food trucks that are scheduled to be there as of this writing are Green Jar Cocina, Pop’s Mobile Brick Oven Pizza, and Kona Ice.

Lewis Tree Service, Mass Audubon, and Davey Resource Group will be present to discuss careers in forestry and demonstrate their equipment.

Volunteers should arrive at 11 a.m. Tools and bags will be provided.

Upcoming concerts at Narrows Center for the Arts

There are a couple of upcoming performances that you might want to check out at the Narrows Center for the Arts, 16 Anawan St., Fall River.

Uli Jon Roth & His Band will be there on Thursday, April 25, from 8 to 11 p.m. He’s a German guitarist, famous for his work with the rock band Scorpions. For this show at the Narrows, he’ll be performing music from his time with Scorpions and Electric Sun, along with Jimi Hendrix covers and his own solo material. Doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets are $47 in advance, and $52 the day of the show. Find tickets online at https://tinyurl.com/5n8nncb5.

See bluegrass boundary-pushers Barnstar! on Friday, April 26, from 8 to 10 p.m. The opening act will be Northampton’s Lisa Bastoni. Doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets are $30 in advance and $33 on the day of the show. Purchase tickets online at https://tinyurl.com/bddkmea7.

Celebrate Portuguese poetry, culture, and Fall River poets

Viva Fall River and Newport Poetry are teaming up to present the first annual Poeisa: A Celebration of Portuguese Poetry, Culture, & Fall River Poets, on Saturday, April 27, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

This event will honor Portuguese contributions to local and national history, as well as international arts and culture. It all starts with a Poetry Walk that meets at the Gates of the City in Fall River, then proceeds to the monument of poet João Teixeira de Medeiros at Heritage State Park. Then, at the Visitor Center, just steps away, there will be a bilingual reading of select works by major Portuguese poets, as well as a reading of award-winning poems from the middle and high school poetry contest.

This event is presented by Viva Fall River, Newport Poetry, and the City of Fall River. It’s sponsored by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation, Europa Pastries & Coffee Shop, and Chaves Market. With support from Bristol Community College LusoCentro, Brown University Department of Portuguese and Brazilian Studies, Fall River Cultural Council, and Mass Cultural Council.

First-ever YArt Sale at The Marion Art Center

The Marion Art Center is hosting its first-ever YArt Sale on Saturday, April 27, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., in the multipurpose room at Sippican Elementary School, 16 Spring St.

Plymouth Philharmonic pays tribute to Queens of Rock & Soul

The Plymouth Philharmonic Orchestra is capping off a stellar concert season with a collaboration with acclaimed Broadway vocalists on Saturday, April 27, and Sunday, April 28.

The Queens of Rock & Soul is a tribute to Tina Turner and Aretha Franklin, with featured guest vocalists Shaleah Adkisson and Tamika Lawrence.

Orchestra and singers alike will be conducted by Steven Karidoyanes, and the concerts will feature timeless classics like “What’s Love Got to Do with It,” “Proud Mary,” “Simply the Best,” “Natural Woman,” “River Deep Mountain High,” “Chain of Fools,” and more.

The April 27 performance will be at 7:30 p.m., and the April 28 performance will be at 3 p.m. Both will be held at Plymouth Memorial Hall, 83 Court St.

A free shuttle will run to and from Memorial Hall, beginning 90 minutes before the concert, from the Hotel 1620 parking lot. The shuttle will return to the parking area immediately following the concert.

Plymouth Philharmonic’s 108th season is funded in part by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency, and media sponsor 95.9 WATD-FM. Newfield House is the Pops series sponsor, with additional support from Cape Cod 5.

Newport Classical community concert features Empire Wild

Newport Classical presents a community concert featuring Empire Wild on Sunday, April 28, at 2:30 p.m., at Newport Craft Brewing, 293 JT Connell Hwy.

Enjoy a genre-bending musical experience while having some beer and a bite to eat.

This performance is free, but registration is required due to limited seating capacity.

Seaglass Theater Company presents ‘Not Afraid to Dare’ at Gallery X

On Sunday, April 28, at 3 p.m., the Seaglass Theater Company presents “Not Afraid to Dare” at Gallery X, 169 William St., New Bedford.

Isabel Randall and Anthony Pilcher make their Seaglass debuts in a concert that highlights Black composers who have made tremendous contributions to classical music despite significant obstacles.

There will also be an exhibition of artwork by Meclina Gomes, who designed the graphic materials for the production.

“Not Afraid to Dare” is supported by a grant from the SouthCoast Community Foundation.

See it before it’s gone: ‘Small Wonders’ art exhibit at Audubon Nature Center and Aquarium

There’s still time to see “Small Wonders,” an art exhibit with works by Katie Khan, at the Audubon Nature Center and Aquarium, 1401 Hope St., Bristol.

The exhibit remains on display through April 30.

Khan works in watercolor and gouache, from larger-scale landscapes to miniatures only a few inches tall.

The exhibit is free with admission.
