Amanda Gorman, who became the youngest-known inaugural poet when she spoke at Joe Biden's presidential inauguration in 2021, is mourning an important member of her family.

The first-ever Youth Poet Laureate took to Instagram to share the loss with her followers on Friday, Oct. 6, revealing that her family pup Lulu had crossed over the rainbow bridge.

She posted a photo of the small dog, which appears to be some sort of toy poodle mix, wearing a collar, a purple bow behind one ear, and a diaper.

"Heartbroken after losing our family dog," Gorman, 25, began on Instagram. "I’m reflecting on how this light and love of my life had been found from a shelter, and how there are so many life-changing dogs still in the same situation."

She then took a moment to encourage her followers to turn to The Milo Foundation, where she assumedly adopted Lulu from, if they were considering bringing a new animal into their hearts and homes.

"The mission of The Milo Foundation is to rescue adoptable dogs and cats from high-kill animal control shelters and adopt them to loving homes best suited to provide lifetime care," she explained. "If your life has ever been touched by an animal with a hard start, please consider sharing and donating. Love you my Lulu 💛."

The foundation, based in Point Richmond, Calif., rescues and adopts out approximately 1,400 animals each year, according to their website.

In addition to sending her their condolences, many fans thanked her for taking the opportunity to promote adoption in a world where so many animals are euthanized every day. A few even shared that their own pets had come from the same organization.

"I always say that Scout n Coco actually rescued us," a commenter sympathized. "Sending you love & light."
