Almost 100 Competitors Ski The 'Gnarliest Terrain In The East'

At Smugglers' Notch Resort, VT, a ski competition recently reignited East Coast skiers' clichéd hardcore reputation.

"Yesterday’s Extreme Challenge certainly lived up to its name. We had just shy of 100 fearless competitors take on some of the gnarliest terrain in the east."

Did you scroll through all of the action shots? They saved the best competitor for last.

The Extreme Challenge is an annual competition that gives junior and adult freeskiers and riders the opportunity to show their big mountain skiing on the most difficult terrain the East has to offer.

Spectators are treated to a birds eye view from Madonna I lift or watch from a roped off area easily accessed from midstation.

The spread eagles, billygoating, and cliff hucking seen at the event is perhaps more impressive when you remember that it's Vermont, where the landing is more likely to be hard than soft.

That kind of snow can put even the greatest Freeride World Tour skiers in for a doozy.

But this year, almost 100 skiers sent it for the Extreme Challenge.

On the other coast of the US, with the storms hitting us in a few days, we're in for soft landings. The perfect playground for our own personal extreme challenges, perhaps.
