Alamar Cosmetics founder Gabriela Trujillo on creating a brand that celebrates her Cuban roots
One of the things I love to see is a young Latina who is passionate about her roots, and Gabriela Trujillo is very passionate. The Cuban-born makeup artist and Youtube star took her career to the next level in 2017 when she founded Alamar Cosmetics.
Named after the town where she was born, Gabriela wanted to create a beauty brand that personified her connection to the people of Cuba. “I just thought Alamar was the perfect name,” she says. “The actual word means stay close to the sea... to me that means stay close to your culture, stay close to your roots, stay close to what makes you unique.”
Making sure that Alamar Cosmetics included shades and formulas that catered to every Latina was a major priority for Gabriela. She explains, “I was really inspired by Black-owned brands and I saw the reaction of their communities and the women were so excited... they were like, ‘Wow, these are colors that match me!’
