Abelardo's opens in Springfield; family-friendly snack, drink hangout opens on Campbell

This week in Springfield restaurant news: A fast food Mexican spot opens along Glenstone, and Campbell Avenue gains two places for Latin fare.

Fast casual Mexican restaurant opens up in former Thai Express spot

Nebraska-based franchise Abelardo's Mexican Fresh has officially opened its Springfield, Missouri, location. The restaurant is in the building that housed the original Thai Express, 948 S. Glenstone Ave. The restaurant is open daily from 7 a.m. to midnight.

Abelardo's started in Papillion, Nebraska, in 2002, according to its website, with a focus on fresh food, affordable pricing and quick service. The franchise has 50 locations across six states.

Family-friendly spot for drinks, snacks, games opens

El Cafecito owners Shanie and Cristian Valdez's newest venture is opening May 4. El Escondite, 2528-A S. Campbell Ave., will offer "a refreshing blend of drinks, Mexican snacks, and interactive games," according to its website.

The family-friendly spot for drinks and snacks will be open 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

The menu will include craft cocktails and agua frescas as well as favorite foods like ceviche and elotes, grilled street corn.

Live music returns to South Campbell Avenue

OXO Bar & Grill has taken over more than KISS Bar & Grill's spot at 2550 S. Campbell Ave. — the Latin bar is also a place for live music along South Campbell Avenue. The bar opened in mid-March and hosts themed parties, international karaoke and weekly events.

The bar and restaurant portion of OXO is open from 4 to 9 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday and is family friendly, according to OXO's Facebook page. Live music and other events may have age restrictions and cover charges.
