At the end of August, Karine Staehle (née Martins) of 90 Day Fiancé shared messages on social media alleging that her husband, Paul Staehle, whom she starred alongside on the reality show, went missing while traveling in Brazil.

Now, Staehle, who is alive and safe, is explaining what really happened during the time that his family thought he was missing, telling TMZ that he faced a small “hiccup” on a boat ride that ignited the whole situation.

The 40-year-old claimed that he contacted his mother for help while on the boat ride, but then his phone died. He went on to say that he and the person on the boat with him—who was apparently a fan of 90 Day Fiancé—stayed "a few days" on a floating houseboat in the Amazon but there was no phone charger and bad cell service.

Staehle's mother was alarmed after their last text exchange, and she shared the messages with 90 Day Fiancé blogger John Yates who posted them on his Instagram.

Around the same time, Karine shared the alarming messages on her own social media, including what appeared to be a memorial of sorts, writing, "Not all of our memories were bad. Our children loved you very much...We will never forgot [sic] you or the good memories we all shared.” Karine deleted the post later and made her Instagram private.

While speaking with the publication, Staehle also stated that this wasn't a hoax or publicity stunt, saying, "If that was the case, I would have gone on Instagram Live, or I would have posted things. I never wanted any of this stuff to go public.”

While Staehle and Karine have had an on-again, off-again relationship, they share two sons, Pierre and Ethan. The couple appeared on the first season of 90 Day Fiancé.

Last July, Staehle and Pierre were reported missing in Louisville, Kentucky, although he soon turned up and claimed that they were just on a long trip. People reported that Child Protective Services took custody of the two boys after.

Since then, the couple's two kids have been living with a family in foster care, though they continue to fight to regain custody, as reported by In Touch Weekly.

The couple has faced further trouble in recent years, with Karine filing a protective order against Staehle in 2021, later dropping it in February 2023. Karine was also reported missing by Staehle once in 2020.
