7 Things to Spend $900 On That Aren’t Leggings

The New York Post reports that the women of New York have gone so bonkers that they are spending $900 on leggings. I am a real woman who lives in New York city and this sounds insane. So I asked about a dozen others who live here too, ages 22 to 35, how much they’re spending on workout pants these days. The most anyone’s spent is $98, and that’s for Lululemon, which was heretofore the Hermes of athleisure. And about half of the women who’d shelled out for a snazzy pair of Lulus regretted doing so. “I don’t even like them,” says Natalie, who works in finance and is gearing up to run the Brooklyn half-marathon this weekend. Her favorite workout pants? “Gap Body capris that I got on sale for like $11—good fit, good hold, don’t stretch out or ball up.”

“I use my workout clothes now as almost investment pieces. I use them as real outfits,” one woman tells the Post. But for most women, workout pants are just that—something you wear on a run, or in yoga class. Emily, a teacher, tells Yahoo Style, “I don’t know that I’m especially fond of any of my workout pants. I wear them to get sweaty so favoritism isn’t a priority. The paper points to Fendi’s $900 white stirrup leggings as the height of workout chic. I point to them as the height of ridiculousness. If you have an extra $900 bucks, here are some things on which to spend it!

Foster 18 baby elephants.
Through the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust you can foster an orphaned baby elephant for just $50 per year it spends in the elephant nursery in Nairobi National Park.

A flight to Morocco.
Here is a roundtrip ticket from New York to Casablanca for $927.

Balenciaga’s new spring fanny pack!
They call it a “leather belt bag,” but let’s be honest, it’s a fanny pack. And it’s this seasons hottest silhouette (said in Stefon’s voice, but not a joke).

6 months of membership at Equinox
Workout pants are not an investment, but actually working out is. And if you’re going to splurge, you might as well drop your hard-earned cash on sweating in a nice gym with fun classes and plenty of perks.

A room in Bushwick.
You might not be able to rent more than a closet in Manhattan, but $900 will rent you a cute room within walking distance of Roberta’s.

Crate & Barrell’s Ollie Sofa.
This sophisticated grey couch would work in just about any room—and it’s not even $900!

Rutherford.
Talk about an investment! Give this three-week-old Golden Retreiver puppy a home and you’ll have a companion for over a decade.
