For all of the many methods of body-hair removal out there—from shaving to sugaring to waxing, and everything else in between—laser hair removal is the only one that promises permanent results. While professional laser hair removal treatments definitely dowork, they’re typically not very budget friendly. Couple that with the fact that most of us will be hunkering down at-home for the foreseeable future, and at-home laser hair removal devices become all the more enticing.

When choosing a handheld hair removal device to invest your money into, in terms of the technology, you have two general options: IPL or a diode laser. A majority of at-home laser hair removal devices rely on IPL—or intense pulsated light—therapy, in which tiny beams of light zap the bulb within each hair follicle. “In essence, it is using heat to destroy the hair follicles,” explains Marisa Garshick, a dermatologist in New York City, “and many of the at-home devices utilize this technology.” IPL technology uses a variety of different light wavelengths, and dermatologists also use it for photo rejuvenation procedures (AKA fading dark spots).

On the flip side, diode laser technology uses one single wavelength of light, which experts say can help minimize damage to the surrounding skin (and also be used safely on all skin types and shades). When beamed onto the skin, the light is selectively absorbed by the pigment, or melanin, within the hair follicle, making it a more targeted (and often more effective) approach to hair removal.

“Both devices rely on the same target, which is the pigment of the hair follicle, to have an effect,” Garshick explains. “At the most basic level, the diode refers to an actual laser, while the IPL is a light-based device.”

Whichever light beam route you choose, at-home laser hair removal products have come a long way just in the past few years, meaning that with a bit of consistency and a lot of patience will come real results. Before you head down a deep rabbit hole of reading Amazon reviews, here’s our round-up of the six best at-home laser hair removal devices on the market.

One super important editor’s note: Because laser hair removal relies on melanin to produce results, it’s often not effective on lighter hair colors (like blonde and light gray), which, by nature, contain less pigment. If you have a lighter hair color, consult with a dermatologist before investing your money into an expensive at-home device (and also read the fine print of every product description—most companies disclose this information up front).

They say summer bodies are made in the winter, but who says the adage only pertains to working out? Just as you employ the right equipment, clothing, and diet to achieve the body you want, the same goes for the smooth skin you desire.

We get it: reaching for your handy razor is quick and convenient, especially in pressing situations that leave no room to book a wax or laser hair removal session. Still, razors aren’t the best option, considering how easily they produce thicker, coarser hair, ingrown hairs, bumps, and more that threaten the smooth skin you’re after.

Of all the various body hair removal options available—from shaving with the best razors to sugaring to waxing—laser hair removal (both professional and at home) is the only strategy that promises more permanent results. However, in-office treatments can be costly, which is why there is a surplus of at-home laser hair removal devices waiting to enter your life.

At-home handheld hair removal devices come in two categories: IPL or a diode laser. Most at-home laser hair removal devices rely on IPL—intense pulsated light—therapy, in which tiny beams of light at different wavelengths zap the bulb within each hair follicle. “In essence, it is using heat to destroy the hair follicles,” says dermatologist Dr. Marisa K. Garshick, who mentions that dermatologists also use versions of IPL for photo rejuvenation procedures (a.k.a. fading dark spots). On the flip side, diode laser technology uses one single wavelength of light, which experts say can help minimize damage to the surrounding skin and be used safely on all skin types and shades. The light is selectively absorbed by the pigment, or melanin, within the hair follicle, making it a more targeted (and often more effective) approach to hair removal.

According to dermatologist Dr. Karan Lal, it’s important to note that most at-home devices are “best suited for small to medium hairs in small areas—upper lip, chin, cheeks, bikini, etc.,” he says. “They are typically not meant for large surface areas like the back.” (There are a few exceptions, but we’ll get to that later).

To help you wade through the treacherous waters of the World Wide Web, we consulted our experts and customer reviews to find the 10 best at-home laser hair removal devices for women.

Meet the Experts

Dr. Marisa K. Garshick is a dermatologist practicing with MCDS Dermatology in New York and New Jersey.

Dr. Karan Lal is a dermatologist and director of pediatric dermatology and cosmetic surgery at Affiliated Dermatology in Scottsdale, Arizona.

How long does it take to see results?

“Both IPL and diode devices rely on the same target, which is the pigment of the hair follicle, to have an effect,” Dr. Garshick says. She adds, “At the most basic level, the diode refers to an actual laser, while the IPL is a light-based device.”

With a bit of consistency and a lot of patience whichever light beam route you opt for will come with real results. Typically, it will take at least a few sessions to see any change, and each session should be spaced out at least one week apart. Remember always to follow the instructions of your specific device.

Does laser hair removal hurt?

Depending on the intensity level of the laser (many of the devices have multiple settings), it can feel uncomfortable. When each follicle gets zapped, it might sting a bit—many people compare it to a rubber band being snapped on the skin. But hey, no pain, no gain, right?

Does laser hair removal work on all skin tones and hair colors?

Before you start shopping (and zapping) away, we do have one important editor’s note: Since laser hair removal relies on melanin to produce results, it’s often not effective on lighter hair colors, like blonde and light gray, which, by nature, contain less pigment. If you have a lighter hair color, consult with a dermatologist before investing your money into an expensive at-home device. Also, read the fine print of every product description because most companies disclose this information upfront. Laser hair removal is also safe for people of color, but certain lasers can cause hyperpigmentation and irritation on darker skin tones, so again, it is best to consult your dermatologist.

<span class="photo-credit">Hearst Owned</span>

Is at-home laser hair removal safe?

Generally speaking, laser hair removal devices are safe. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take proper precautions. “At-home laser hair removal can be safe,” says Dr. Lal. However, he adds, “It is not universally safe because many factors play a role in safety. All available devices are safe for those with light skin and dark hair.” Needless to say, burns and redness can still occur with less powerful at-home devices. Contact a doctor if you are concerned or notice any discomfort or irritation.

Dr. Lal has a few helpful tips to make removal easier and safer: “Be sure to have tiny stubble the laser can pick up for treatment. Make sure the device you are using is suitable for your skin color and hair color. Don’t use this laser if you have red or very light blonde hair. Don’t over-pulse the laser in the same location as this could lead to burns.”

Which is the best in-office laser?

For in-office treatments, “The gold standard is the Gentlemax Pro by Candela. It is a dual alexandrite and Nd-Yag laser that can treat all skin types, hairs of various sizes, and in various locations,” says Dr. Lal.
