6 Biggest Announcements In Gamescom Opening Night Live

Tekken 8 reveal

It seems like every few weeks Geoff Keighley is hosting a video game thing that shows a bunch of game trailers interspersed with ads and strange celebrity appearances, and Gamescom was no different this year. Dubbed Opening Night Live, the presentation showed off dozens of games, both announced and unannounced, with new details being shown for most of them.

We aren’t going to list every Opening Night Live announcement, but we have sorted through all of them to find the absolute cream of the crop. From new games to updates to old games, and plenty of release dates given out, here are the 6 biggest announcements from Gamescom’s Opening Night Live.

Expeditions: A Mudrunner Game

Focus Entertainment.

The MudRunner series has a dedicated fanbase of very passionate would-be truckers who love getting their tires dirty, and Expeditions: A MudRunner Game seems to be taking everything to the next level. In Expeditions, you’ll be tasked with utilizing a host of gadgets and vehicles of all shapes and sizes to complete scientific expeditions. You can send out a drone to survey the landscape, place down anchors to help climb slopes, and of course hop into an offroad vehicle to spin up some mud.

Expeditions: A MudRunner Game is set to launch sometime in 2024 on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

Sonic Superstars Release Date

Sonic Superstars, the latest and potentially greatest game in the Sonic series was announced a while back, and we’ve gotten a bunch of details since then, but one detail in particular that was elusive was the game’s release date. Gamescom has finally given us that, and it’s an interesting choice: October 17, 2023. Never mind the fact that it’s in October, which already has too many games coming out, but launching three days before Super Mario Bros. Wonder is certainly a bold strategy.

Sonic Superstars will be available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC on October 17, 2023.

New Zenless Zone Zero Footage

Hoyoverse – the developer behind Genshin Impact and Honkai Star Rail – finally showed off more of its next neon cyberpunk-y game, Zenless Zone Zero. We didn’t really get that many more details about the game from the trailer, but the music is incredible, and we saw a wolf-man and some new enemies. It’s all looking very delightful.

We still have no release date for ZZZ, or any official platforms, but we know it’ll at least be on PC and iOS.

Cyberpunk 2077 2.0 Update

CD Projekt revealed that Cyberpunk 2077 was getting a huge 2.0 update, with a bunch of new areas to explore, new quests, vehicle combat, a new police system, reworked cyberware and perks, and so so much more. Gameplay designer Yuliia Pryimak said that “a lot” of what was in the trailer wasn’t just locked behind the upcoming Phantom Liberty DLC, and will be available for owners of the current game for free — provided they’re on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, or PC. Last-gen owners will have to upgrade to current gen or miss out, which is a bit of a bummer.

Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty will be released on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on September 26, 2023.

Tekken 8 Release Date

The next entry in the beloved Tekken series finally has a release date, after months of speculation and closed beta testing. That’s right, it’s in October… nah, thankfully not. Tekken 8 is a little further out, coming out very early next year. There’s also a battle hub lobby similar to Street Fighter 6’s, and it was confirmed Kuma is coming back. Still no Eddy Gordo though, which is a bit worrying/

Tekken 8 will be released on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on January 26, 2024.

Little Nightmares 3

The Little Nightmares series has been a little bit of a sleeper hit for Bandai Namco, amassing a pretty healthy audience of dedicated fans and players. The puzzle platformer series is set to get a third game next year, but in an interesting turn of events, it won’t be from the same developer as the first two games, Tarsier Studios, probably because the studio got acquired by Embracer. Instead, Until Dawn developer Supermassive Games will be heading up development on the new game.

Little Nightmares 3 will release on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC in 2024.
