Too Many Games Are Coming Out In October 2023

AC Mirage

2023 has been an absolutely cracking year for video games. With games like Baldur’s Gate 3, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, and Resident Evil 4 Remake already contenders for the best game of the year, it’s hard to believe there are still more on the way.

But there are! Starfield is just around the corner, Mortal Kombat 1 won’t be far behind, there’s a new Like A Dragon game in November, and a full remake of Super Mario RPG not long after. It’s a massive year, but no other month this year quite compares to the massive onslaught of huge games coming in October.

Seriously, take a look at the list below:

  • October 5 - Assassin’s Creed Mirage

  • October 6 - Detective Pikachu Returns

  • October 10 - Forza Motorsport

  • October 13 - Lords of the Fallen

  • October 17 - Sonic Superstars

  • October 20 - Marvel’s Spider-Man 2

  • October 20 - Super Mario Bros. Wonder

  • October 24 - Cities Skylines 2

  • October 24 - Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 1

  • October 26 - Ghostrunner 2

  • October 27 - Alan Wake 2

Phew. What a massive list of huge games. And that’s just the big, triple-A games, there are a bunch of smaller games too. Mineko’s Night Market, Alone in the Dark, Disgaea 7, Wild Card Football, Hot Wheels Unleashed 2, Crymachina, and Headbangers: Rhythm Royale are all October releases worth keeping an eye on.

So how exactly did this happen? Well, there’s a pretty obvious solution, but we can’t say with certainty that it's solely responsible: Starfield. Bethesda’s latest and greatest is almost certainly going to dominate conversation on social media, making it difficult for any other games to gain traction.

Now, not every company is worried about Starfield. Sony and Nintendo are unlikely to care, given their own respective releases – Spider-Man 2 and Super Mario Bros. Wonder – are not even remotely in competition with Starfield and are likely to capture attention no matter when they release.

Other developers and publishers though? Well, let’s just say that Alan Wake 2 probably isn’t going to have the marketing budget to go head to head with Starfield, nor is Assassin’s Creed Mirage. We already know one game that shifted its release date to avoid Starfield, Baldur’s Gate 3, which moved up its PC release by a month to avoid the mammoth space RPG. It’s not impossible that others did the same.

Either way, good luck out there gamers, October is going to be rough. Stock up on caffeine and snacks, it’s gonna be a long month.
