5 Festival Fashion Trends That Never Go Out of Style

Music styles may change. Artists come and go, but there are fashion trends that never fade from the festival season.

While famous festivalgoers like Kate Moss and Vanessa Hudgens have left their imprint on the category, and fans often dress like their favorite performers, there are five themes that can always be found on the fair ground.

From free-spirited boho dresses to worn-in denim, here’s a look at five trends that are guaranteed to be a festival hit.

Color

Bright colors are one way to stand out in a festival crowd. Before there was “Barbie,” festivalgoers planned their outfits around bright shades of pink, neon hues and monochromatic looks. While fits and styles evolve, these dopamine-inducing color continue to have a grip on festival fashion and accessories.

Denim

Whether vintage or brand new, denim is a staple in men’s and women’s festival wardrobes. The tried-and-true fabric fits into a variety of trends like Western and bohemian and stands strongly as its own category. Denim’s versatility makes it a perfect item for multi-day festivals. It’s also an ideal canvas for customization. Jean shorts are the most iconic item, worn long, short, ripped and frayed. Jean jackets are another staple for chilly nights.

Boho

Though boho fashion falls in and out of style, the bohemian spirit comes alive at festivals, evident in the wide range of flowing fabrics, handmade details and nods to the late ’60s and ’70. Taking cues from the OG of festivals, Woodstock, festival goers tap into their inner flower child by wearing crochet, lace, moody florals and paisley prints. Open knit tops, scarf tops and embellished vests are balanced by flare and bell-bottom jeans, knit flare pants and jean shorts. Wide belts are often slung over handkerchief hem dresses and lightweight prairie skirts. Felt hats, feather jewelry, skinny scarves, wood heels and ankle boots finish the free-spirited look.

Dystopian

One part rave, one part Burning Man, dystopian fashion finds its way back into festival wardrobes each year. Shredded, sliced or ripped, destroyed garments like jeans and sweaters are hallmarks of the theme. Bikini tops, bodysuits, mesh tops, hot pants and leather pants bring a subversive edge to the look, while faux fur accessories and metallic and sparkly fabrics bring a party vibe. Unconventional accessories like harnesses and leg warmers emphasize the amount of exposed skin the trend calls for.

Western

Western fashion is a constant at festivals regardless of if any country artists take the stage. Classic Western staples like cowboy hats and boots, fringe and suede jackets make an appearance every season, often paired with denim, lace and leather. Belts with statement buckles and turquoise and silver jewelry are a mainstay. Recent interpretations of the trend invite bolder colors and flashier materials into the mix, like metallic pink cowboy boots and mirrored cowboy hats.
