When you're designing a kitchen, it's likely the cabinets will set the tone for the entire style of your space. In this gallery of our favorite classic kitchen designs, you'll find everything you need to cook up the kitchen of your dreams, starting with photographs that incorporate simple kitchen cabinet design, modern kitchen cabinet ideas, and every gorgeous cabinet style in between.
One thing to keep in mind when designing cabinets for a kitchen is how the space will echo the overall architectural design of your home. If you live in a traditional historic residence, a white timeless kitchen design might feel age appropriate and fresh all at once. Cabinets coated in an energizing paint color could feel at right in a number of home styles, from cottages to city apartments. Other important considerations when choosing kitchen cabinets: uppers versus lowers, deep drawers versus swinging doors, natural wood versus painted. Kitchen cabinet ideas for storage, like cabinets that reach the ceiling to utilize vertical space, might be a mix of solid doors versus glass-front ones to display prized collections and pretty dishware.
To inspire your kitchen materials selection for a renovation or a new build, we rounded up these 60 brilliant kitchen cabinet ideas, pulled from our extensive VERANDA house tour archives. Scroll through to discover smart kitchen island inspiration, countertops, and kitchen backsplash ideas to elevate your kitchen to luxury status.
White Oak Cabinets
White oak cabinetry, plaster-finished walls, and earthy ceramic lamps (Gregorius Pineo) radiate organic beauty in designer Jane Schwab's light-as-air Charlotte penthouse. Tall doors, some topped with transoms designed by the architects with delicate scrolled muntins, create height and light without heaviness. This same application is seen elsewhere throughout the residence. Chair fabric, Fabricut
French Gray Cabinets
Pretty cabinets, painted French Gray by Farrow & Ball (with walls coated in the same shade), wrap this eat-in kitchen in a calming hue. Custom slipcovers (The Lamp Shoppe) crafted from French linen tea towels dress up metal lighting pendants in the kitchen of this Dallas house. Petticoat-like slipcovers drape utilitarian metal light fixtures. Counter seating, Janus et Cie. Apple artwork, Enzo Mari for Danese Milano. Cow illustration, Hugo Guinness
Linen White Cabinets with Burgundy Interiors
In Hartford, Connecticut, interior designer Kristen McCory's clients presented her with a rosy proposition: Use a deep burgundy Lacanche range and hood as a starting point and then don't hold back.
"It was a chance to do something completely different," says McCory, who repeated the rich shade inside the glass cabinets flanking the sink (and on floor-to-ceiling cabinetry in an adjacent butler's pantry). But like all satisfying spice, the beauty is in the balance. Pegasus marble countertops, linen white cabinetry paint, and black accents temper the red.
Green Cabinets
The traditi0nal butler’s pantry in this 1920s Tudor in Houston designed by Charlotte Moss is painted Dartsmouth Green (Benjamin Moore) with classic satin nickel hardware. Glass-front upper cabinets display glassware and silver pieces. This smaller space in a home is an ideal place to experiment with color and pattern.
Antique-Inspired Cabinets
In this 1920s New Jersey estate designed by Steven Gambrel, the profiles of the cabinetry and moldings echo those of adjoining rooms, as do the kitchen's dark wood floors. “Not long ago you’d walk into a kitchen and it wouldn’t speak to the rest of the house,” says Gambrel. “I like to make kitchens equally complex and layered.”
He added dramatic details such as a gunmetal-and-brass hood, a veneered table, and textured shades to the space. The golden leather cantilever seating (York Street Studio) juxtaposes tonal gray millwork. The island countertop is crafted of indigo green marble. Range, BlueStar
Tree Bark-Embellished Cabinets
To help establish a defining sense of place in this Mississippi hunting lodge, designer Richard Keith Langham left room for whimsy, which shows up in details like the bark panels in cabinet doors. The kitchen’s wrought-iron chandelier (Currey & Company) lights a maple-topped island and suede swivel counter stools (Louis J. Solomon).
Open Shelving with White Paneled Cabinets
A treasured collection of Wedgwood plates crowns open kitchen shelving in Mia Reay's Jacobean castle that was designed by George Webster in the early 19th century. In this all white kitchen, save the graphic checkered floor tiles that are Victorian, lower cabinet fronts with a vertical paneling detail, simple white square backsplash tile, a painted wood table, and white wicker seating provide plenty of textural diversity.
Bright Blue Paneled Cabinets
Gil Schafer and the late Suzanne Rheinstein channeled the blue of the nearby sea in the paneled cabinets of the casual kitchen of this Newport Beach home.
White Cabinets with Gold Hardware
Statuario marble clads kitchen walls in earthen opulence, as a large white island and cabinets with gold hardware provide a clean palette for pops of blue and yellow. Upper cabinets reach the ceiling, providing maximum vertical storage. The adjoining breakfast room features hand-painted floor tiles inspired by the bar at Le Sirenuse in Positano, Italy, seen here in the foreground. The formal cook space matches the grandeur of this Atlanta estate.
Neutral Cabinets
Portuguese tiles form a kitchen backsplash mural akin to classical artwork in this 1920s Tudor in Houston designed by Charlotte Moss. Upper and lower cabinets in a calming neutral leave room for the show-stopping tilework.
No Upper Cabinets
The absence of upper cabinets provides the perfect spot for Kenneth Noland’s Mexican Camino to bathe the kitchen in serene color. This kitchen space is open to the great room, clad in simple bleached walnut planks, as the rest of the Michael S. Smith-designed Los Angeles home. Range, Wolf. Pendant fixtures, Philippe Anthonioz
Under-Island Cabinets
In this seven-story Beaux Arts townhouse in New York, the stone-clad kitchen (Christopher Peacock) features a mix of dolomite, arabescato, and sivec surfaces. Under-island cabinets, as well as upper and lower cabinets in the same style, make for plenty of storage. Pendants, Carrier and Company for Visual Comfort & Co.
Seafoam Island
The owners’ Australian shepherd, Bear, lounges on the kitchen’s wide plank flooring, smoothed over from centuries of use, in this historic Charleston residence. A lantern from Charleston’s Urban Electric Co. in sunny yellow hangs above the seafoam-hued island, anchoring the kitchen in unexpected color. Cushion fabric, Perennials. Painting, Margaret Kennedy.
Salvaged Cabinets
MORE Design + Build was the contractor for the 2023 Kips Bay Decorator Show House in Dallas, and with co-founder Kurt Bielawski, was tasked with redesigning its kitchen.
“The house itself is an older home for Dallas, so the kitchen needed to feel like it could have gone to the same party, so to speak,” Bielawski says. “I love to cook, I love traveling Europe, and I like a casual yet elegant lifestyle and aesthetic, all of which led me to create this feel that it's an old space where we salvaged the floor and cabinetry and then had to create a new kitchen from there.” With the oversize island, the party is likely to gather around time and again.
Bleached Oak Cabinetry
Geometric stained oak floors and bleached oak cabinetry bring warmth to the kitchen’s marble countertops and plaster walls. A custom oak-topped island, leafy Italian tiles, and a subtle taupe scheme bring serene balance to the kitchen. The minimalist mood in the kitchen is a visual respite from the riotous pattern and color found throughout this English country home.
Vented Cabinets
A pretty and functional cabinet door feature, vents provide airflow as well as subtle pattern in this Timothy Whealon-designed butler's pantry. The countertops are a refined Calacatta Oro (Marmi Natural Stone). The backsplash tiles were handmade in Morocco. Slender library lights (Ann-Morris) illuminate the utilitarian workspace. Artwork, Donald Baechler. Paint, Classic Gray by Benjamin Moore
Creamy White Cabinets with Painted Island
In this Nantucket cottage's custom Plain English kitchen, creamy countertops are topped with rustic wood counters. Pearly Moroccan wall tiles, similar in color to the cabinetry, are laid to the ceiling without grout to give the walls more rhythm. A slate backsplash contrasts the warm white. The work table base is painted a pretty green and looks like a piece of furniture. Pendant lighting, Hector Finch
Light Gray Cabinets
In the kitchen of this 1926 Buckhead residence, a French bistro-inspired brass hood from François & Co.’s new line shines against existing gray tilework and cabinets in a similar hue. A mix of drawers in various sizes make up lower cabinets, while glass-front doors above show off pretty tableware. Lighting, Visual Comfort & Co.. Stools, Bradley
Bleached Wood Cabinets with Contrasting Island
Sleek bleached wood cabinetry and slab-front drawers from Christopher Peacock’s Montauk collection are paired with an island and wet bar cabinetry stained slate blue for contrast. Burgundy Cabinets
The deep burgundy in this butler's pantry by interior designer Kristen McCory was inspired by a Lacanche range and hood in the adjacent kitchen. The floral settee print takes a queue from the rich floor-to-ceiling cabinetry that's lined with pleated white fabric to conceal less attractive items stored behind.
Masculine Cabinets
For her redesign of a historic Colonial Williamsburg home, designer Heather Chadduck Hillegas wanted the rooms to flow together seamlessly.
