Material: “I take a look at the upper sole material,” Gretta Leinberry explains. “I often gravitate toward materials that can be cleaned easily, since espadrilles are my go-to summer shoe from beach to bar — canvas is your friend!” Bibeau also recommends that shoppers look at the lightweightedness of the canvas or cotton fabric, or the perfect strength-to-weight ratio. “As a durable, true fabric, it doesn’t need to be heavy,” she says. Alternatively, Molatore looks at other fabrics for longevity. “You might also want to check out the material makeup and opt for a shoe with a suede or leather body so it lasts a bit longer,” she notes.
Sole: Two of our experts look at the sole’s material as a determining factor. “Pay attention to the sole — for it to be classified as an espadrille, the composition of its sole must be jute fiber to benefit its true comfort,” Bibeau says. Gretta Leinberry recommends looking at the quality of the braid or roped sole. “I ask myself if the braid is well secured to the sole and if the fibers look compact,” she says. “I don't want there to be a chance of the sole unraveling.”

Molatore leans on espadrilles for spring and summer events. “They’re the perfect style to have on hand when you need to elevate an outfit while still remaining pretty comfortable,” she says. “Any sundress or linen set works perfectly with an espadrille shoe, but they can also be styled nicely with jeans and a T-shirt.”
Gretta Leinberry recommends taking an unconventional approach when it comes to styling. “If you haven't heard about the ‘wrong shoe theory’ yet, you're missing out,” she says. “It's as simple as it sounds and involves styling your outfit with an unexpected shoe choice to give it more depth and excitement.” Instead of a wedge espadrille with a more obvious, lightweight maxi dress, she says to think about going for a high-waisted Bermuda short and oversized button-down instead. “On the flip side, I'd find a flatform sneaker espadrille to style back to those easy summer dresses,” she says.
How should you care for espadrille shoes?
“Caring for your espadrilles depends on the upper sole material,” Gretta Leinberry says. “If you're working with canvas or another fabric, I like to make a solution of mild soap and warm water and get to work with a toothbrush. Suede and leather are on the trickier side to clean, so I make sure to always spray them with a protectant prior to wear.” Spot cleaning is Molatore’s go-to. “When in doubt, spot clean with a damp rag and maybe a little mild soap,” she says. “When it comes to the bottoms, wiping the rubber soles should do the trick and make them feel as good as new.” Bibeau also recommends hand washing with light soap on a damp towel to remove dirt. “Always air-dry as maintenance after washing or if they get wet,” she says.
