13 things to do this week in the Canandaigua area

If you’ve ever thought about hiring a personal scheduler, this might be the week to do it, as Canandaigua and surrounding communities are offering all sorts of things to do.

Here’s what’s happening this week.

1. Everything you wanted to know about asparagus in West Bloomfield

Guests can learn about asparagus history and harvesting, meet descendants of early local growers and hear from a current farmer in the program, "About Asparagus." The event starts at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 7, at the West Bloomfield Historical Society headquarters, 8966 state Routes 5 and 20. Society exhibits will open at 6:30 p.m.

2. South Farmington history explained

Farmington Town Historian Donna Hill-Herendeen will talk about the new South Farmington Historic District, which includes the South Farmington Cemetery, the Meetinghouse Park and chapel, in the program, "Communities Joining Together: The Building and Rescue of the South Farmington Chapel 1889 to Today." 3. Learn more about protecting Canandaigua Lake

A forum on the water quality of Canandaigua Lake will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 8, at Hotel Canandaigua.

A forum on "Water Quality Education for the Community" will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 8, at Hotel Canandaigua, 205 Lakeshore Drive, Canandaigua. Doors open at 5 p.m. The forum aims to provide insights into the state of Canandaigua Lake and the proactive measures required to protect it. Some heavy hitters in the industry will be presenting, including Dr. Lisa Cleckner from the Finger Lakes Institute, Dr. Greg Boyer from SUNY Environmental Science and Forestry, Anthony Prestigiacomo from the state Department of Environmental Conservation and Andy Zepp from the Finger Lakes Land Trust. They will deliver presentations on the water quality of Canandaigua Lake and ongoing conservation efforts in this free event. 4. How to protect plants from deer

Deer can do a number on plants, as most any gardener knows. A program on native plants and deer tolerance will be held at 6 p.m. May 8 at Victor Farmington Library, 15 W. Main St., Victor. Participants will look at some interventions to reduce deer damage, including ways to help ward off deer and how to add deer-tolerant natives to the landscape. 5. Take a walk in the woods in Naples

Join Jason Gorman of the Finger Lakes Land Trust on a Wesley Hill walk at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 9, at the Wesley Hill Nature Preserve, 6280 Gulick Road, Naples. Gorman will lead the way through diverse stands of mature forest, many wildflowers and sweeping views of the hills surrounding Honeoye Lake’s southern end.Bring a hiking pole if you'd like. 6. Explore the online marketplace in Canandaigua

"Exploring Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace" will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. May 9 at Wood Library, 134 N. Main St., Canandaigua. For Ontario County residents ages 60 and up, this class will teach participants how to use the popular websites Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace. 7. Learn more about a 19th-century kidnapping

Ontario County Historian Preston Pierce will present "The Crime of the 19th Century? The William Morgan Kidnapping and its Social and Political Consequences" Lecture: " at 7 p.m. May 9 at Farmington Town Hall, 1000 County Road 8, Farmington. This is the second of three lectures as part of the Farmington Historic Preservation Commission's “Trials, Mysteries & Corruption” spring lecture series. 8. Will you be the next star of ‘Bright Star’ in Clifton Springs?

Phelps-Clifton Springs Community Theatre will host auditions for the musical "Bright Star," which will be held 6:30 p.m. Friday, May 10, and 9:30 a.m. Saturday, May 11, in the Midlakes High School Black Box Theatre, 1554 state Route 488, Clifton Springs. All adults and students in grades 11 or 12 are welcome to audition for the musical. There are no roles for children. Those auditioning will read from the script, be taught a song and should dress for movement auditions. Anyone trying out need attend only one of the audition dates. There are leading roles for six men and four women, as well as other roles. Park in the Middle School parking lot on the north side of the building, which is located closest to Route 96 and enter through door 19 of the school and proceed down the hall to the theater. Callbacks will be held at 6:30 p.m. Monday, May 13.

9. Get your plants here and some master gardening advice

The master gardeners of Cornell Cooperative Extension of Ontario County will host the annual plant sale from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. May 11 at the Cooperative Extension Center, 480 N. Main St., Canandaigua. The sale will feature perennial and annual flowers (including woodland natives), some tomato and herb plants, trees and shrubs and a few houseplants. 10. It’s craft and yard sale season in Canandaigua

The Canandaigua American Legion will host a craft and community sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 11 at the Legion Post, 454 N. Main St., Canandaigua. Several vendors and community members will display crafts and yard sale items inside and outside the building. Legion Auxiliary members are providing food and raffles throughout the day, and the event includes a silent auction for a patriotic quilt and artwork. A chicken barbecue sponsored by Squadron 256-Sons of the American Legion will begin at 11 a.m. and continue until sold out. For more information, call Barb at 585-721-9766.

11. Help out Happy Tails shelter

The Paws for Spring wvent will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 11 at the Happy Tails Animal Shelter, 2976 County Road 48. A multitude of vendors will be selling homemade pet food and supplies, jewelry, handmade crafts, quilts, 3-D art and more at the Ontario County Humane Society event. Food trucks, popcorn and bounce house also await visitors. 12. Capture your nature observations and drawings

Angela Cannon-Crothers from the Rochester Museum and Science Center will teach a class on nature journaling at 10:30 a.m. May 11 at Victor Farmington Library, 15 W. Main St., Victor. 13. Ontario County Arts Council exhibit opens

Meet the Ontario County Arts Council artists at an rexhibit eception from 1 to 3 p.m. May 11 at Wood Library, 134 N. Main St., Canandaigua. The annual exhibit is an opportunity for artists who are members of the Arts Council to display, share and sell their recent work. Each contributing member submits one piece of work to the exhibit. Works will be on display through June 14 in the library’s third-floor Ewing Community Room.
