Watch: Why did romance heat up in Ohio during eclipse?

TIFFIN, Ohio (WJW) — They came from as far away as Japan and the Netherlands to get married during the total solar eclipse in Ohio.

Monday’s “Elope at the Eclipse” in Tiffin drew 120 couples, and 1,500 family and friends.

Couples also came from California, New York, and of course, NE Ohio, to get married during the totality of the eclipse darkness.

The New York Times, Washington Post, and other national outlets sent reporters and writers to cover the “history-making event,” said Destination Seneca County Executive Director Bryce Riggs.

Among those to say ‘I do’ were Tracy and Nick Knam from Independence.

“Getting to experience the sacred bond of marriage during a lifetime event of totality was the greatest gift Seneca County could have ever offered to all of us couples,” Tracy told FOX 8 News. “It was an honor and privilege to create history surrounded by friends and family, all because someone had a vision and another someone said yes to it.”

The eclipse wedding was the idea of Destination Seneca County, “to have fun and showcase historical downtown Tiffin as well as scenic Seneca County during the once-in-a-lifetime moment,” explained Riggs.

Destination Seneca County supplied the wedding cakes, a champagne toast, live music, a photographer, and the officiant, Judge Damon D. Alt, all at no cost.
